Iconic Philadelphia Sitcoms Unite for Crossover Episode
Philadelphia is buzzing with excitement as two of its most beloved sitcoms, “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” prepare for a highly anticipated crossover episode. This collaboration was confirmed by Rob McElhenney, the creator and star of “It’s Always Sunny,” through a social media post on Thursday.
In his announcement, McElhenney shared an image featuring himself, “Sunny” co-star Charlie Day, and Quinta Brunson, the creator and star of “Abbott Elementary,” on the set of Brunson’s show, stirring curiosity among fans.

The idea for the crossover may have sparked earlier this year when McElhenney humorously referenced the notorious Glasgow Willy Wonka event, likening it to a potential “Abbott/Sunny” crossover. Brunson responded eagerly, indicating a willingness to collaborate.
During a podcast interview with Variety over the summer, Brunson hinted that a crossover was indeed in development. She revealed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I’m excited to just shake things up in this way. I love TV, everyone knows that, but I love TV moments, and I miss those big TV moments. I remember how exciting they were.” Her comments suggest that this crossover could provide the thrilling moments many fans of both series look forward to.
The connection between “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is facilitated by their respective corporate alignments, as “Abbott” airs on Disney-owned ABC while “Sunny” is produced by Disney-owned FX. Additionally, Randall Einhorn, who has been involved with both shows as a director and executive producer, previously helmed episodes during “Sunny’s” fifth and sixth seasons.
Since its debut, “Abbott Elementary” has captured audiences with its clever writing and engaging performances, receiving 24 Emmy nominations and winning four awards, including Best Comedy Actress for Brunson. In contrast, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” while a staple of modern comedy for nearly 20 years, has struggled for recognition at major award shows, receiving only a few nominations, most notably for stunt coordination.
Fans can look forward to the return of “Abbott Elementary” for its fourth season on October 9 on ABC, while McElhenney and his team are currently in the writing phase for Season 17 of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Both shows are available for streaming on Hulu, making it easy for viewers to catch up on the previous seasons before the crossover airs.
