Powerful Earthquake Strikes Western Turkey, Causing Panic in Istanbul
Bursa, Turkey
April 23, 2025
A significant earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale jolted western Turkey today, prompting immediate responses from residents across Istanbul. As the ground shook at 12:49 PM local time (0949 GMT), many rushed outside, seeking safety in public areas such as parks, or taking refuge on doorsteps.
The Istanbul governor’s office reported that over 150 individuals sustained injuries as they fled buildings in a panic. Fortunately, no critical injuries were reported, suggesting that the city was relatively prepared for such an emergency.
According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the earthquake’s epicenter was located near Silivri, approximately 50 miles west of Istanbul, at a shallow depth of 4.3 miles. This geographical context may explain the widespread effects felt throughout the city.
In the wake of the quake, aftershocks were felt intermittently, contributing to the anxiety among the public. Emergency services and local authorities are actively monitoring the situation as they assess the damage and provide necessary support to those affected.
Turkey, situated in a seismically active region, has experienced numerous earthquakes in its history. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness for such natural disasters in densely populated urban areas.
