Penguin Random House Acquires Book by Dwayne Johnson and Nick Bilton

Penguin Random House has secured the rights to an upcoming book co-authored by actor and professional wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and journalist Nick Bilton. The acquisition of this untitled work was confirmed by Gillian Blake, the Executive Vice President, publisher, and editorial director of Crown, who obtained North American rights through agents Jay Mandel and Erin Malone at WME. While details regarding the publication date remain undisclosed, the anticipation surrounding the project is palpable.

According to an announcement, the book will delve into the compelling narrative surrounding the emergence and dissolution of Hawaii’s infamous crime ring referred to as “the Company,” which was under the leadership of Wilford “Nappy” Pulawa, recognized as the first and sole Hawaiian mob leader. Set against the backdrop of the 1960s and 1970s, the book aspires to illuminate a distinct segment of American history while addressing the broader theme of how Hawaii has experienced systematic exploitation by outside parties during this significant era. The publisher noted that the book is intended to be the foundation for a film directed by Martin Scorsese, featuring a screenplay co-written by Johnson and Bilton, with Emily Blunt and Leonardo DiCaprio set to lead the cast.

In a recent statement, Johnson emphasized the deeper themes present in the story, stating, “This isn’t just a gangster story—it’s about power, identity, and what was taken from the Hawaiian people. What drew me to this project wasn’t just the action and the intensity. My own family lived through parts of this era, and I’ve seen firsthand the complicated legacy it left behind. Telling this story is a way to honor our Polynesian culture, and honor where we come from and share the untold history of what really happened in paradise.” Through this exploration, both Johnson and Bilton aim to provide a nuanced perspective on Hawaii’s complex history and cultural heritage, creating an engaging narrative that resonates beyond the confines of a crime drama.
