DUI Arrest Following Wrong Way Incident on Interstate 395
A woman has been charged with driving under the influence after a dramatic incident on Interstate 395 in Norwich over the weekend. The events unfolded in the early hours when she was reported driving the wrong way on the highway, prompting multiple state troopers to take action to prevent potential collisions.
At approximately 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, the Connecticut State Police received numerous 911 calls alerting them to a vehicle traveling south in the northbound lanes, particularly around Exit 11. The speed of the vehicle was noted to be alarmingly high, raising serious concerns for the safety of other drivers on the road.
Footage from a dashboard camera, provided by a nearby motorist, captured the perilous moment when another driver had to swerve to avoid a head-on collision. The video highlighted the urgency of the situation, showcasing the risks posed by the wrong way driver.
State police were able to locate the errant vehicle, identified as a 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan, as it drew near the Troop E barracks in Montville. Upon attempting to stop the vehicle, the driver reportedly veered into a parking lot, displaying evasive behavior towards law enforcement.
To prevent her from entering the highway again, multiple troopers executed a strategic maneuver, intentionally striking the Tiguan. Dashcam footage revealed one cruiser hitting the rear driver side of the vehicle, while another vehicle moved alongside to box it in, ensuring that the driver could not continue her dangerous path. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported during this intervention.
Authorities reported that upon approaching the SUV, they had to forcibly remove the driver, who did not exit the vehicle as instructed. The driver was identified as 34-year-old Cailin Sorder from Griswold.
Following her arrest, Sorder appeared to be under the influence, leading to charges that included operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, driving the wrong way on a limited access highway, engaging in a police pursuit, interfering with an officer, and first-degree reckless endangerment.
She was subsequently held on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwich Superior Court for hearings related to these charges.
