The recent inclusion of Nick Drake’s melancholic song “One of These Things First” in Barack Obama’s summer playlist caught many off guard. However, it reflects how Drake’s haunting melodies continue to find relevance long after his passing over fifty years ago. This enduring connection is further exemplified by an upcoming box set that showcases a meticulous archival exploration of one of his seminal works.

Slated for release on July 25, The Making of Five Leaves Left will offer fans a unique opportunity to delve into the early recording sessions and previously unreleased outtakes from Drake’s 1969 debut album. This foundational album features timeless tracks such as “Way to Blue,” “River Man,” “Time Has Told Me,” and “Day Is Done,” which have since become cherished favorites among music enthusiasts.

Universal Music, the label overseeing the release, has shared that the Drake family has historically been hesitant to compile such collections. Their focus remained on the three albums published during Drake’s lifetime, which also include Bryter Layter and Pink Moon. While the estate has released various compilations and a live album, they have steered clear of extensive making-of projects similar to those produced for iconic musicians like Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead.

This change in direction came about when significant tapes were uncovered from new external sources, including a surprising find hidden away in a drawer. This discovery prompted Gabrielle, Drake’s sister, who manages his estate, to initiate this ambitious project, which has spanned nearly a decade.

According to the label, the selection of tracks aims to narrate the story of the album authentically, rather than simply compiling every available take. The box set, composed of four discs or 4 LPs, includes Drake’s inaugural recording session at London’s Sound Techniques studio, alongside a tape that features him rehearsing songs likely for a college performance around the album’s creation.

The initial sections of the box feature early renditions of classics like “Time Has Told Me,” “Fruit Tree,” and “Day Is Done,” including an intriguing alternative version of “Strange Face” and a unique interpretation of “Day Is Done,” where Drake provides vocals without accompanying himself on guitar.

Additionally, outtakes from sessions with producer Joe Boyd, recorded from late 1968 to spring 1969, comprise alternative versions of tracks such as “River Man,” “Cello Song,” “Time of No Reply,” and “The Thoughts of Mary Jane.” The complete package, which is available for preorder, concludes with the original album as fans know it, complemented by a 60-page booklet filled with recording details and memorabilia related to Drake’s music.
