Charges Filed Against Airport Employees in Fatal Crash Footage Leak
Two employees of the airport have been charged following allegations that they leaked video footage to CNN related to last week’s tragic plane and helicopter accident in Washington, D.C., which resulted in the loss of 67 lives.
The footage, broadcast by CNN on Friday, provided significant insights into the catastrophic event that unfolded on January 29 over the Potomac River.
In the released videos, American Airlines Flight 5342 can be seen as it descends toward Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, while an Army Black Hawk helicopter approaches directly into its flight path, leading to a dramatic explosion in midair.
Lamine Mbengue, a 21-year-old from Rockville, Maryland, was taken into custody on Friday. He faces charges of computer trespass for allegedly making unauthorized copies of records from the Airports Authority, according to a spokesperson from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
After his arrest, Mbengue was booked at the Arlington County Adult Detention Center but was later released on his own recognizance.
Jonathan Savoy, 45, from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, has also been charged with similar computer trespass offenses and was released following a summons issued by a magistrate.
As investigations continue, there has been no information provided regarding whether either suspect has legal representation or if they still hold their positions at the airport.
In the aftermath of the crash, salvage teams commenced efforts to retrieve wreckage from the Potomac River on Monday, successfully recovering an engine and fragments of the airplane’s fuselage.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board, which is managing the ongoing probe, efforts to recover the remaining parts of the helicopter will commence once the recovery of the airplane is complete.
