Dana Carvey Reflects on His Elon Musk Impression
Comedian Dana Carvey has candidly acknowledged that his portrayal of Elon Musk may not be his strongest work. During a recent episode of his podcast, “Superfly,” co-hosted with David Spade, the duo touched upon the subject of Musk, prompting Carvey to showcase a brief impression which he later critiqued himself.
“I can’t do Elon Musk very well, but I can do something that sounds not like anything,” Carvey remarked. “He has an incredible accent.” This self-deprecating humor highlights Carvey’s recognition of the complexities associated with impersonating such a multifaceted figure.
Carvey’s impression comes shortly after his appearance on “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) following Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election. During the sketch, he embodied a “Dark MAGA” version of Musk, portraying a character who boldly claimed responsibility for running the government.
In character, Carvey quipped, “But seriously, I run the country now. America’s gonna be like one of my rockets. They’re super cool and super fun, but there’s a slight chance they could blow up and everybody dies,” a line delivered with characteristic wit and flair.
In response to Carvey’s comedic take, Musk expressed his discontent, commenting on X with, “Dana Carvey just sounds like Dana Carvey.” His remarks continued as he engaged with other users who praised the “Dark MAGA” hat featured in the sketch, adding humorously, “They are so mad that @realDonaldTrump won .” Musk did not stop there; he later aired his broader criticisms of SNL, stating, “SNL has been dying slowly for years, as they become increasingly out of touch with reality,” referring specifically to their recent satirical efforts and the impact they had on political narratives.
In the wake of Trump’s reelection, Musk found himself controversially appointed as a co-leader of the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), alongside political figure Vivek Ramaswamy. Musk emphasized the gravity of the appointment, claiming it would “send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in government waste, which is a lot of people!”
