Dana Carvey Improves His Elon Musk Impression on Real Time with Bill Maher
Comedian Dana Carvey, known for his variety of celebrity impressions, has been working on enhancing his portrayal of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. Although he previously expressed difficulty in capturing Musk’s distinct mannerisms, recent attempts suggest progress.
During a recent episode of Real Time with Bill Maher that aired on March 21, Carvey revisited his impression of Musk. “I don’t really do it yet, but I’m working on it,” he revealed, indicating his dedication to perfecting the impersonation.
Carvey mimicked Musk’s characteristic speech patterns, commenting, “We gotta go to Mars, because we can’t sustain life on planet Earth. It’s just gonna be really cool, OK? Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm.” His attempt showcased an effort to embody the billionaire’s unique blend of enthusiasm and uncertainty.
Shifting gears, Carvey also showcased his well-known Donald Trump impression. He humorously quipped, “What he said. He’s a smart cookie, he’s a tough cookie, he’s a Cookie Monster. This one, he’s smart. Everybody talks about it. He’s like Chips Ahoy.” His playful take on Trump’s speech patterns further emphasized Carvey’s talent for capturing the quirky nuances of prominent figures.
The comedian previously attempted a Musk impersonation during a November 2024 SNL episode, shortly after the presidential election. However, he later reflected on his performance during a podcast with David Spade, admitting, “I can’t do Elon Musk very well, but I can do something that sounds not like anything.” He remarked on the complexity of Musk’s accent, which he described as a mix of South African, Canadian, and a hint of British tones.
On the same episode of Real Time, Carvey showcased his impressions of other notable figures, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom he humorously noted, “always sounds like he just took a hit of pot.” He also channeled historical figures like John F. Kennedy and entertainment legend Johnny Carson, in addition to current President Joe Biden.
In a light-hearted exchange, Carvey poked fun at Maher, questioning how someone in show business could maintain the same job since 1992 with various incarnations. Maher, who has hosted multiple iterations of political talk shows, responded with a quick-witted “Oh, shut up,” prompting Carvey to celebrate winning a bet with his wife that Maher would respond to him that way.
Real Time With Bill Maher airs on Fridays at 10/9c on HBO.
