Derek Hough Embraces Adventure on Recent Iceland Trip
Known for his spirited performances on Dancing with the Stars, Derek Hough brings the same enthusiasm to his travel adventures. In August, he explored the breathtaking landscapes of Iceland alongside his wife, Hayley Erbert, where they engaged in a variety of outdoor activities such as glacier hikes, ice cave explorations, and watching puffins, even descending into a dormant volcano.
“We thrive on adventure and the great outdoors,” Hough shared with Travel + Leisure. “Our trips are filled with activities; relaxing on a beach is rarely our first choice. We prefer to immerse ourselves in the local scenery and experiences.” This includes indulging in the local cuisine.
“We’re open to trying anything,” he said enthusiastically. “I have a particular fondness for spicy food.”
Even with his adventurous spirit, Hough remains prepared for the aftermath of enjoying culinary delights and carries Pepcid Max Icy Cool Mint to alleviate heartburn associated with spicy meals. He mentioned that altitude and in-flight meals often lead to discomfort, prompting him to rely on the antacid during air travel. In a lighthearted remark, Hough quipped that he keeps some at the judge’s table on Dancing with the Stars, sharing it with fellow judge Bruno Tonioli during commercial breaks.

After transitioning from competitor to judge on Dancing with the Stars, Hough finds joy in his new role, viewing it as a blend of participation and mentorship. “I appreciate how this role allows me to contribute to the show, sharing my experiences with contestants, while also freeing up time for my other projects,” he remarked.
One of those projects is his upcoming holiday dance tour, Dance for the Holidays, launching on November 1 and spanning 40 cities. Despite the demanding schedule that includes traveling back to Los Angeles for Dancing with the Stars filming, Hough remains undeterred.
To maintain balance, Hough emphasizes a regimen including nutritious eating, ice baths, and physical therapy, along with leisure time spent snacking with Erbert. The couple’s shared involvement on the holiday tour only adds to the joy of their travels.
“Each city brings its own charm, especially during the holidays with festive decorations,” he expressed. “It’s a truly magical time to be on the road.”
Having been immersed in holiday music since July in preparation, Hough is set to deliver a unique experience during the tour. Although he has participated in numerous holiday-themed television events, this marks his first holiday dance tour, where he aims to introduce fresh interpretations of classic songs, including a Latin-influenced rendition of “Winter Wonderland,” while honoring dance legends like Gene Kelly.
“I always want to include a special homage to Gene Kelly in my show,” he noted. “Having Hayley as a co-star will make it even more special, especially during this festive season.” Hough appreciates the chance to tour with his wife, adding a layer of connection to their performances.
Despite challenges like Erbert’s recent health scare—including a cranial hematoma that required surgery—Hough is excited for their next adventures, which include trips to Thailand, Vietnam, and swimming with humpback whales in Tonga and orcas at Erbert’s request.
“I’m a bit apprehensive about swimming with orcas, but she’s enthusiastic,” he admitted, impressed by her adventurous spirit. “She’s incredible in wanting to embrace these experiences.”
