Portrayed by David Tennant, Kilgrave possesses the disturbing ability to manipulate minds, but he wields this power not for altruistic ends but for his own narcissistic enjoyment. His actions lead to some of the most sinister outcomes, including instilling pain in others and manipulating individuals into committing acts of violence.
His predilection for torment is epitomized in his relationship with Jessica Jones, whom he ensnares in a web of control, forcing her into servitude to fulfill his whims. Although Jessica ultimately breaks free from his grasp, his obsession leads him down a dark path that harms her friends and inflicts trauma upon her.
This portrayal makes Kilgrave a uniquely nefarious opponent, enriched by both a dark backstory involving childhood experiments and a bizarre sense of humor. His ability to generate chaos within the MCU is unquestionable.
Though he met his demise at the end of Jessica Jones’ first season—when Jessica herself took his life—his influence lingered, notably through hallucinations that surfaced in subsequent seasons, hinting that his story might not be fully concluded.
David Tennant’s Interest in Reviving Kilgrave
For Season 2 of Born Again, it would be wise for Marvel to resurrect the character, giving Daredevil a formidable adversary who poses an even greater threat than Kingpin, complicating Matt Murdock’s already challenging life.
David Tennant has expressed enthusiasm for returning to the role, sharing on the Off Menu podcast that writing for Kilgrave poses challenges due to his precise nature and the difficulty of establishing conflict. However, he remains open to exploring the character’s story further.
As Tennant highlights, death in the MCU isn’t always final, with possibilities of multiverse and resurrection lore paving the way for Kilgrave’s return, even hinting at new powers he could showcase.
