[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Dark Winds Season 3 Episode 4, “Chahalheel (Darkness Falls).”]
The latest episode of Dark Winds introduced a compelling love triangle as Bernadette Manuelito, portrayed by Jessica Matten, finds herself torn between two men: Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) and her new colleague Ivan Muños (Alex Meraz). This development unfolds in Season 3’s fourth episode, titled “Chahalheel.”
The tension escalates when Bernadette’s official border patrol photo surfaces at a crime scene, prompting Chee to express his concerns about the potential dangers she might face from a drug trafficking operation. Although suspicion initially falls on Tom Spenser (Bruce Greenwood), the investigation remains murky without further evidence.
Disturbed by his worries for Bernadette, Chee takes the initiative to visit her at the border, a decision that involves a significant journey. Unbeknownst to him, Bernadette has recently started developing feelings for Ivan, which adds an unexpected layer to their interaction. Upon his arrival at her workplace, they arrange to meet at a weigh station, where they engage in conversations about their cases and reminisce about their past, hinting at unresolved emotions.
Fans might recall that Bernadette and Chee previously shared a romantic moment in Season 2, but Ivan’s presence in her life complicates the situation. During a visit to a local bar, Ivan introduces himself to Chee, who is momentarily unaware of Ivan’s impact on Bernadette’s life. This encounter marks a reunion for Gordon and Meraz, who previously acted together in the Twilight series as part of its Wolf Pack, adding a touch of nostalgia for long-time fans.
“They find it amusing,” Gordon noted, acknowledging the circle they’ve come full circle from playing characters embroiled in a legendary love triangle in Twilight to their current roles. He added, “It’s wonderful to see us working together again, especially on a show that holds such significance.”
Meraz echoed these sentiments, drawing comparisons between their current storyline and the famous love dynamics seen in the Twilight movies. The two actors share a camaraderie that transcends their on-screen roles, each considering the other as family.
Matten shared her excitement about the casting choices, pointing out the nostalgic factor of integrating two actors known for their roles in Twilight. She expressed her satisfaction with how the plot decision turned out: “Bringing together two of the wolves for this love triangle was a brilliant nod to the fans.”
As the episode progresses, Bernadette reveals her budding relationship with Ivan to Chee. Initially, Chee appears accepting of the news, but emotionally reacts later that evening, pleading with Bernadette to leave the border with him. She ultimately turns him down and instead seeks solace with Ivan.
Gordon highlighted the irony in Chee’s inability to recognize the romantic dynamics playing out around him, causing him to feel foolish for initially being amicable toward Ivan. “I didn’t realize he was the new person in her life until later, and it hit me hard,” he remarked.
The uncertainty in Bernadette’s feelings looms large over the unfolding narrative. Matten articulated her character’s struggle: “She’s navigating a fog of confusion about whom to trust, all while yearning for connection and love.”
Meraz offered insights into his character, suggesting that while he portrays Ivan as sincere, there exists an elusive quality to him. “I’ve often played antagonistic roles, so stepping into the role of a love interest felt uniquely challenging but enjoyable,” he noted.
Gordon praised Meraz’s portrayal, stating, “It’s an opportunity for Alex to showcase his charm, and Jessica’s charisma adds a wonderful dynamic.” Despite the competition present in their characters’ interactions, he emphasized the enjoyment of collaborating with friends.
Dark Winds, Season 3, airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC and AMC+.
