Exploring the Heart of ‘Maybe Happy Ending’: A Unique Musical Journey
‘Maybe Happy Ending’ features a stellar cast including Darren Criss and Helen J Shen, with music composed by Will Aronson, lyrics by Hue Park, and a collaborative book by both Aronson and Park. The production is directed by Tony Award winner Michael Arden, known for his innovative approaches to musical theater.
The ensemble is further complemented by talents such as Steven Huynh, Hannah Kevitt, Daniel May, and Christopher James Tamayo.
Set in a modest one-room apartment on the fringes of Seoul, the story centers on Oliver (played by Criss), who enjoys a serene existence filled with jazz music and nurturing his beloved plant. However, life takes an interesting turn when the retired HelperBot 3, once a leading technological marvel, finds his daily routine disrupted by an unexpected encounter with his neighbor, Claire (Shen), who borrows his charger. This seemingly mundane request marks the beginning of an unlikely friendship, an unexpected journey, and the potential for romance.
Winning the esteemed Richard Rodgers Award, ‘Maybe Happy Ending’ presents a whimsical yet profound narrative about two marginalized beings on the brink of obsolescence who learn that even robots can experience love and connection. Directed by the visionary Michael Arden, acclaimed for productions like ‘Parade’ and ‘Once on This Island,’ the show boasts impressive scenic design by Dane Laffrey, known for his work on ‘A Christmas Carol.’ With its touching themes and captivating storytelling, the musical is a refreshingly original exploration of the little joys that imbue life with purpose.
The musical was developed in both Korean and English, showcasing its universal appeal. The Korean version debuted in December 2016 at the DaeMyung Culture Factory in Seoul, achieving critical acclaim and winning six Korean Musical Awards, including Best Musical. The English adaptation premiered in the U.S. at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta during the 2019-2020 season and was also recognized with the Richard Rodgers Production Award in 2017.
