Dave Coulier Opens Up About His Cancer Journey

Dave Coulier, best known for his role on “Full House,” is featured on the cover of Parade magazine, where he shares candid insights about his ongoing battle with cancer.

Having recently completed his sixth round of chemotherapy in February, Coulier has been vocal about the challenges he faces, both physically and emotionally. “The symptoms were getting worse and worse with each treatment,” he reflected, noting an increase in neuropathy, nausea, and dizziness. He described experiencing what is commonly referred to as “chemo brain,” which has impacted his daily activities significantly.

“Some days, I just didn’t want to do anything,” Coulier expressed. While battling the fatigue associated with his illness, he found himself increasingly limited in his ability to engage in activities he once enjoyed. “There was so much cancer-related fatigue that got progressively worse, and I thought, ‘Wow, this is how it’s going to go,’” he added.

His recent hospitalization coincided with this difficult period, during which he became ill and initially believed it was a side effect of the chemotherapy. “I didn’t know that I had caught a virus,” he explained, recounting a ten-day period of confusion and discomfort as he struggled to assess his symptoms.

During his hospital stay, doctors discovered ground-glass opacities in his lungs, raising concerns about his health. “There’s a thing called [ground-glass opacity (GGO)]. On a scan, in your lungs it looks like particles of glass,” Coulier elaborated. His wife, Melissa, expressed relief that they pursued a checkup, as medical professionals indicated that timely intervention was critical.

Throughout this arduous journey, Melissa has been a steadfast source of support for Coulier. “Seeing my wife exhausted on those days when I’m like, ‘Can you get me some water?’… She’s been running ragged helping me,” he remarked, highlighting the emotional toll such illnesses can inflict on family members. “That’s the picture that will stay with me — how this affects your family members.”

In response to his diagnosis, Coulier has made significant changes to his diet, eliminating certain foods that pose risks to his health. He has cut out sushi and desserts, acknowledging the increased susceptibility to infections and health complications associated with raw fish. “I’ve completely cut out all sugar,” he stated, emphasizing a newfound commitment to his health. “Because of my age and because I still like to play ice hockey, I had a lot of inflammation, and once I stopped sugar, it was gone in a matter of seven days.”

Despite the obstacles he faces, Coulier maintains an optimistic outlook. “Especially because I’m in a position where I can inspire others. A negative attitude doesn’t inspire anybody,” he affirmed. “Positivity, though, can take you a long way.” He reflected on his journey, suggesting that perhaps this experience is a “blessed” opportunity for growth and inspiration. “Maybe I’ve been, you know, given this torch, and a magic wand waved itself over me and said, ‘Dave, you can do something here.’”
