Dave Grohl to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Saturday Night Live
Dave Grohl will perform at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live. The event, titled SNL 50: The Homecoming Concert, is scheduled for February 14 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Grohl will share the stage with notable artists including Lady Gaga, Bad Bunny, Miley Cyrus, Post Malone, and Chris Martin, among others.
Although Grohl was not part of the initial lineup announcement made last week, his presence has been confirmed through a newly released promotional video for the concert. This special will be available for streaming live on Peacock. Lorne Michaels, the creator of SNL, along with producer Mark Ronson, are behind the concert, which will be hosted by Jimmy Fallon.
The Foo Fighters, Grohl’s band, have remained mostly under the radar since last September when Grohl publicly shared that he had fathered a child outside his marriage. Addressing the situation on Instagram, Grohl expressed his love for his family and his commitment to rebuilding their trust and earning their forgiveness.
Following this announcement, the Foo Fighters withdrew from the Soundside Music Festival in Bridgeport, Connecticut, canceling their performance just days before they were set to headline. Grohl re-emerged in the public eye during last week’s FireAid charity concert in Los Angeles.
At FireAid, Grohl reunited with former Nirvana bandmates Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear for a series of performances, including songs like “Breed” with St. Vincent and “Territorial Pissings” with Joan Jett. A highlight of the concert was Grohl performing “All Apologies” alongside his daughter, Violet Grohl, who is now 18 years old.
Grohl’s participation in SNL 50 is particularly fitting, as he holds the record for the most musical appearances on the show, having performed 15 times from 1992 to 2023. His contributions include nine performances with the Foo Fighters and two with Nirvana, as well as appearances alongside other notable musicians such as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Paul McCartney. Grohl also featured in the recent documentary 50 Years of SNL Music, where he discussed his longstanding connection with the show.
SNL 50: The Homecoming Concert will also include performances from a diverse lineup of artists such as Eddie Vedder, Jack White, and Brandi Carlile, enhancing the celebration of five decades of musical history on the iconic show.
In anticipation of the milestone anniversary, Rolling Stone recently highlighted the 50 best musical performances from SNL, featuring several of the artists scheduled to perform at the anniversary concert, along with memorable moments from Nirvana.
