David Allen Readies for Showdown with Johnny Fisher in Riyadh
As the fight date approaches, heavyweight David Allen is adamant about not placing himself in the role of an underdog against the rising star Johnny Fisher. The two boxers are set to clash this Saturday as part of the Riyadh Season event, which is headlined by the much-anticipated rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury, broadcast live on Sky Sports Box Office.
Fisher, also known as the “Romford Bull,” has garnered attention as an unbeaten prospect in the heavyweight division. Despite his popularity and favorable position heading into the match, Allen maintains a confident stance.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the seasoned fighter from Doncaster emphasized the significance of experience, stating, “I think experience is a factor. But I’m better than him. Genuinely. To a lot of people that sounds absurd because they’ve seen me out of shape.” His comments suggest a belief in his skills and a firm conviction that he can outmatch his younger opponent.
Allen has previously sparred with Fisher and believes that this experience will influence the younger fighter’s mindset going into the match. “I think he will be nervous because we sparred and I got the better of him,” Allen remarked, recalling how Fisher has looked up to him over the years as a veteran in the sport. He likened this matchup to his prior experience against David Price, where the reverence he felt for his opponent added an emotional layer to the bout.
Despite his confidence, Allen admitted to feeling a degree of trepidation. “This one there’s a touch of: if he hits me, I’m going to go over,” he confessed, indicating that the potential for a highlight-reel knockout is ever-present. Allen has trained rigorously, motivated by the fear of being knocked out.
He assured fans that he is focused and ready for a tough battle, stating, “I’m going to treat it like a three three-minute rounds boxing contest. I’m going to win all three rounds and there’s every chance I walk him onto something and knock him out.” Allen is clear about his intentions: to outbox Fisher and capitalize on opportunities that might arise during the fight.
In response, Fisher acknowledged the typical pre-fight nerves but framed his sparring experience differently. “If I’m not nervous, there’s something wrong,” he said, while also downplaying the impact of their sparring session. “I was 19 when it happened and it was just a spar. Nothing happened in that spar untoward,” Fisher noted. He expressed confidence in his capabilities, ready to adapt to whatever approach Allen might bring to the ring.
With the stakes high, Fisher encouraged a fast-paced bout, suggesting that an early all-out exchange could make for an exciting spectacle. “He can make it a three-round fight. That will be amazing because then it’s a tear-up from the beginning. And I love a tear-up,” he stated enthusiastically.
Expectations for the Heavyweight Clash
As fight night draws near, it is clear that both fighters are preparing for a significant challenge. With Allen’s experience and Fisher’s rising prowess, fans can anticipate an electrifying matchup that promises to be a highlight of the heavyweight calendar.
