Betty Boop’s Musical Journey Debuts on Broadway
The much-anticipated musical “Boop!” has made its official debut on Broadway, bringing the beloved character of Betty Boop to the stage. Composer and music producer David Foster, known for his extensive work in popular music, appeared on CBS Mornings to discuss this exciting new venture, marking his first foray into Broadway musicals.
“No one had ever suggested that I write a musical before,” Foster revealed, expressing that he was initially indifferent to the idea until he received the offer. He acknowledged the unique challenges that come with creating a musical: “It’s a different process [than writing popular music]. You have to write a lot of songs, and I had much to learn.” Over a span of 18 years in development, Foster wrote about 50 songs, but only 18 made it to the final production.
Reflecting on his experience, Foster noted, “In my life making records, we just wrote what we needed, nothing extra. It all got used. This is the first time I have a ‘drawer’.” He hinted that some of the unused songs could potentially find a home in another project he is currently developing. He also emphasized the collaborative nature of theater, stating, “In my world of making records, I was the dictator, but here the director Jerry [Mitchell] is in charge.”
