PBS to Broadcast Great Performances’ Production of Yellow Face
PBS has announced the air date for the filmed rendition of David Henry Hwang’s acclaimed play, Yellow Face. The production will premiere on Friday, May 16, at 9 p.m. ET, as part of the Great Performances series.
Presented by the Roundabout Theatre Company, Yellow Face features Daniel Dae Kim in the role of an Asian American playwright who stands against the practice of yellowface in large-scale productions such as “Miss Saigon.” Ironically, he later finds himself casting a white actor in the key Asian role for his own play, leading to a comedic exploration of race’s complexities and implications. Directed by Leigh Silverman, the play delves into themes of identity, the entertainment industry, and elements of autobiography through a comedic lens.
In addition to Yellow Face, PBS will also showcase the London revival of Kiss Me, Kate featuring Stephanie J. Block, as well as the Broadway recording of Girl from the North Country. Viewers can find details on how to watch both productions.
The talented cast of Yellow Face includes Kevin Del Aguila as “Actor A,” Ryan Eggold as “Marcus,” Francis Jue as “HYH & Others,” Marinda Anderson as “Actor B,” Greg Keller as “Reporter,” and Shannon Tyo as “Leah & Others.”
“As a longtime fan and supporter of both PBS and Great Performances, I couldn’t be happier for my production company, 3AD, to be collaborating with them to breathe new life into Yellow Face,” Daniel Dae Kim expressed previously. “I am deeply grateful to David, Leigh, Roundabout, our exceptional cast and crew, and everyone who supported our efforts to share this important and entertaining play with a broader audience.”
The creative team behind Yellow Face includes Arnulfo Maldonado for Set Design, Anita Yavich for Costume Design, Lap Chi Chu for Lighting Design, Caroline Eng and Kate Marvin for Sound Design & Original Music, and Yee Eun Nam for Projection Design. The play had a limited Broadway engagement that concluded on November 24, 2024, at the Todd Haimes Theatre located at 227 W 42nd St.
