DeAndre Jordan, the Denver Nuggets center and 2023 NBA Champion, has embraced a plant-based lifestyle since 2018. In a recent interview with Sky Sports’ David Garrido, Jordan discussed his involvement in the Green Action League, an ambitious initiative aimed at driving sustainability in the sports community.
The Green Action League, which runs from November 11 to December 1, is touted as the largest fan-driven campaign focused on sustainability in sports history. Powered by Ball Corporation and hosted on the Planet League platform, this initiative seeks to encourage sports fans globally to adopt environmentally friendly practices.
Participants can earn ‘green points’ by engaging in sustainable activities, competing to help their respective teams claim the title of having the ‘greenest fans.’ Major teams from across various sports, including Arsenal, the Los Angeles Rams, the Denver Nuggets, and the Colorado Avalanche, are participating in this groundbreaking campaign.
Jordan expressed his enthusiasm about the initiative, highlighting its potential to inspire positive environmental habits among fans. “I got involved because I thought it was super cool,” Jordan shared. “This campaign encourages fans to recycle, clean up litter, and even try a vegan meal occasionally—all actions that align closely with my values.”
The campaign features an array of incentives for fans, such as the chance to win courtside tickets, signed jerseys, and other exclusive merchandise. “It’s an excellent way to promote environmental care while also offering fans the opportunity to win cool prizes,” Jordan noted.
Jordan also shared insights on the impact of daily dietary choices on environmental sustainability. “Recycling is crucial,” he remarked, educating listeners on the staggering statistic that 75% of aluminum produced is still in use today. He emphasized the environmental benefits of incorporating plant-based meals into diets, stating, “By choosing plant-based options, you significantly reduce your carbon footprint and conserve water resources that are otherwise consumed in animal farming.”
Highlighting the importance of individual actions, he added, “Even small steps—like going plant-based for a day—can have a noticeable impact. It’s something I encourage everyone to consider.” Jordan expressed confidence in the abilities of his team and the community, stating, “I believe in the Nuggets, in Denver, and in the state of Colorado to do our part in this initiative.”
Reflecting on his transition to a plant-based diet, Jordan explained its effects on his athletic performance and overall well-being. “Dairy contributes to inflammation, which athletes generally want to avoid,” he said. “Since I made the switch, I’ve felt lighter and found it easier to maintain my energy levels.” He emphasized the improved sleep and digestion he has experienced as a result of his dietary changes.
Jordan further shared his commitment to educating his children about health and sustainability. “Through my journey, I’ve learned a lot, and I’m passing this knowledge down to my boys,” he noted. “At ages eight and two, they will have a head start in understanding how to live sustainably and healthily.”
