Death Grips Addresses Breakup Speculation with Uncommon Social Media Post

In response to swirling speculation regarding their breakup, the experimental hip-hop group Death Grips has officially dismissed rumors, confirming their ongoing presence in the music scene.

Speculation about the band’s dissolution first emerged in early February when a supposed leak from producer Andy Morin suggested that the group had concluded its journey together. The message stated, “yeah it’s over,” and implied that the decision was influenced by lead vocalist MC Ride, whose real name is Stefan Burnett.

“The message indicated Stefan doesn’t want to continue,” it mentioned. “But truthfully none of us can predict what will happen next with the group.” At that time, there was no statement from the notoriously private band regarding the rumors.

Yet, on April 8, the group made an announcement via their infrequently updated Instagram account, marking their first communication since October 2023 and affirming their active status. The post featured a message signed by Burnett and drummer Zach Hill, stating, “Despite rumor and hearsay, we remain active as Death Grips.” The handwriting was overlayed on a framed piece of art, but notably, Morin’s name was absent, which might imply a shift in the band’s dynamic moving forward.

Death Grips, established in Sacramento, CA, in 2010, comprised Burnett, Hill, and Morin, and released their first EP, Exmilitary, in April 2011. Their subsequent album, The Money Store, gained them broader recognition, receiving acclaim and charting within the top 20 of both the Heatseeker Albums and Rap Albums lists, while also landing at No. 130 on the Billboard 200.

The group announced an initial breakup in July 2014, claiming “We are now at our best and so Death Grips is over,” and subsequently cancelled a planned tour with Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden.

Despite their declared separation, the latter half of their album The Powers That B was released in 2015, followed by a return to live performances. Since that time, several albums and EPs have been released. However, Death Grips has not taken the stage since their performance at the 2023 Austin City Limits festival and has not announced any upcoming shows.
