Dee Roscioli is set to make her debut as “Madeline Ashton” in the musical Death Becomes Her tonight! Roscioli will be stepping in for Megan Hilty during the April 15 performance at 7:00 pm, followed by another show on April 16 at 2:00 pm. Ahead of her debut, Hilty took to social media to express her support and encouragement for Roscioli.
On Instagram, Hilty wrote, “Something very special is happening tonight (and tomorrow afternoon) at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater. This delightful beauty is making her Madeline Ashton debut! Few possess the talent, poise & grace of Miss Dee Roscioli. Her reputation is impressive – not only for her incredible ability but also for her kindness. Having gotten to know her recently, I can vouch for both! Let’s wish her all the best while I’m with my family – Go get ‘em, Dee! Do it for the GAZE!”
In response, Roscioli returned the sentiment with a heartfelt comment, “Right back atcha my queen.”
Recently, Roscioli joined the cast of Death Becomes Her as the standby for both the roles of Madeline Ashton and Helen Sharp. This marks her first experience on stage in this comedic musical.
Roscioli is widely recognized for her portrayal of Elphaba in various productions of the hit musical Wicked, including Broadway, Chicago, San Francisco, and national tours. Most recently, she showcased her talents as Celine Dion in Titanique Off-Broadway. Her prior credits also include The Cher Show and a revival of Fiddler on the Roof.
If you are looking for a new musical experience, Death Becomes Her offers a fresh and humorous take on its 1992 film counterpart. The show, helmed by Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Christopher Gattelli, features a book by Marco Pennette and an original score by Julia Mattison and Noel Carey.
Set against the backdrop of a rivalry between the glamorous actress Madeline Ashton and the tortured writer Helen Sharp, the story unfolds as Madeline steals Helen’s fiancé. What follows is a comedic battle fueled by jealousy, revenge, and unexpected twists, particularly with the arrival of the enigmatic Viola Van Horn, who offers a potion granting youth and beauty. This sparks a new chapter filled with humor and intrigue as both women navigate life—and death—with their rekindled appearances and age-old grudges.
The original film, which starred Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn, and Bruce Willis, is renowned for its clever satire, innovative visual effects, and standout performances. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, it delves into critical themes such as vanity, the pursuit of immortality, and the often absurd extremes individuals will go to in the name of eternal youth. Its unique blend of sharp wit and campy storytelling, along with groundbreaking special effects for its time, have solidified its place in cinematic history.
Over the years, Death Becomes Her has evolved into a cultural phenomenon, lauded for its enduring appeal within the LGBTQ+ community, its memorable dialogue, and its commentary on society’s obsession with beauty and aging. Its influence persists through numerous tributes and revivals, reflecting its status as a timeless classic that continues to inspire following generations.
Prior to its Broadway launch, the musical was showcased at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago earlier this year. Both productions featured a stellar cast, including Megan Hilty, Jennifer Simard, Christopher Sieber, and Michelle Williams.
