With competitors facing outages, Deezer has chosen a strategic moment to present four new features aimed at enhancing its music streaming platform.

The platform is actively striving to offer not just a year-end recap like Spotify’s Wrapped, but a more interactive way for users to connect with their musical preferences and share experiences through music, no matter where they stream from.

According to Alexis Lanternier, Deezer’s CEO, “At Deezer, we are continuously innovating to deliver the most personalized and customizable music experience available. The new features we are introducing today empower users to enhance their algorithmic control, personalize their environment, and share their favorite tracks seamlessly, even with non-Deezer users. We aim to continuously delight our fans with new, immersive ways to enjoy music.”

Deep Dive into Deezer’s New Features

The upcoming enhancements will be as follows:

Increased Control Over Recommendations
Recent insights suggest that a significant portion, approximately 40%, of music streamers are 34 years or younger, reflecting a demand for more tailored algorithms. Deezer has evolved its Flow feature, which lets users influence music recommendations. Starting in April, a new algorithm customization option will allow users unprecedented control over their music discovery experience. Users will be enabled to adjust their recommendations algorithm without restrictions for the first time in the music streaming industry.

During a recent online showcase, Lanternier introduced what he humorously termed Deezer’s “personalized nightmare section”: a dedicated area where users can view all the artists and tracks they’ve disliked, along with a timeline of their listening habits. Users will no longer receive recommendations from artists they have explicitly rejected. While similar features exist in other platforms, such as Apple Music’s thumbs-up and thumbs-down options, Deezer’s approach offers a distinct level of control.

Tailored User Interface Enhancements
Starting in May, the Deezer app will offer more customization options, allowing users to reorganize the Favorites tab for easier access to desired content and create personalized playlist covers. Users will have a chance to express themselves by selecting photos, shapes, and stickers. During a demo, the creation of a cover was showcased, where users can add fun emojis and vibrant backgrounds to their playlists, transforming the app into a more individual experience.

Monthly Insights with My Deezer Month
Expanding on its annual recap feature, Deezer is set to launch My Deezer Month in early May. This monthly feedback aims to surpass the limited approaches of similar features offered by competitors. Users will receive updates detailing their most-frequently played songs, artists, and genres, presented in an engaging manner. This initiative aims to bring a fresh perspective on listener habits and preferences each month.

Universal Sharing Functionality
In late April, Deezer will unveil a groundbreaking universal sharing link feature, enabling users to share their favorite tracks with friends and family on different streaming services, including Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music. This new rollout builds on the existing Shaker feature, which allows collaborative playlist creation with friends outside Deezer. The ability to share music effortlessly across platforms addresses a significant barrier for users who want to connect with friends not on the same service.

As competition heats up within the music streaming market—with high-fidelity options from Tidal, Apple Music, and Qobuz drawing interest—Deezer continues to carve its niche. While its audio quality remains at CD-level, the ability to share songs confidently with friends, knowing they can appreciate the content regardless of their chosen streaming platform, is a significant advantage and a potential pivot point for users considering the switch.
