Innovative Glue Combines Mussel-Inspired Polymers with Antimicrobial Mucus Properties

A groundbreaking adhesive has emerged from the joint efforts of researchers at MIT and German institutions, merging the powerful adhesive qualities of mussel-inspired polymers with the antimicrobial attributes found in natural mucus.

Mussels are known for their distinct ability to attach themselves to various surfaces, including rocks and ship hulls, by secreting a special fluid that contains proteins bonded through chemical cross-links. This unique mechanism provides a robust adhesion. Notably, similar chemical cross-linking is present in mucin, the primary protein component of mucus, alongside water. George Degen, a postdoctoral researcher in MIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and one of the paper’s coauthors, was intrigued by the potential interactions between mussel-inspired polymers and the chemical groups in mucin.

In order to explore this concept, Degen and his team experimented by mixing solutions of natural mucin proteins with synthetic mussel-inspired polymers. They closely monitored how this mixture solidified and how effectively it adhered to various surfaces over a given period.

“The process resembles a two-part epoxy adhesive,” Degen explains. “When the two liquids are combined, a chemical reaction begins, allowing the mixture to solidify while actively bonding with the surface.”

The resulting adhesive gel demonstrated remarkable sticking ability, even on wet surfaces, while simultaneously inhibiting bacterial growth. The researchers foresee a transformative application for this material, envisioning it could be delivered as a liquid, rapidly transforming into a sticky gel upon application. One possible application is coating medical implants to significantly reduce the risk of infection. Furthermore, the versatility of this approach opens doors to incorporating additional natural substances, such as keratin, which could pave the way for developing environmentally friendly packaging solutions.
