Significant Growth Expected in Women’s Sports Revenue by 2025

Revenue from elite women’s sports is on track to surpass £1.8 billion by 2025, as outlined in a recent report from finance firm Deloitte. Experts affirm that the commercial potential of women’s sports and its athletes is currently at an all-time high.

Achieving a remarkable milestone, last year marked the first instance where revenues for women’s sports exceeded £1 billion. The latest projections indicate an anticipated £1.88 billion will be generated through matchday attendance, broadcasting rights, and commercial activities by 2025.

Forecasts suggest that basketball will soon take the lead as the most lucrative women’s sport, with predictions indicating it could account for 44% of total revenues, surpassing football at 35%.

Commercial income, encompassing sponsorship deals, partnerships, merchandise sales, and income from pre-season tours, is expected to form the largest component of revenue in women’s sports, contributing an estimated 54%. Broadcast revenue is projected to make up 25% of the total, while matchday earnings will represent the remaining 21%.

Jennifer Haskel, who leads knowledge and insights at Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, commented on the trajectory of women’s sports: “The growth of women’s sport has continued to exceed expectations as various competitions, leagues, clubs, and athletes generate significant returns, despite limited resources.” Haskel remarked that women’s sports are “rewriting the playbook” and redefining industry norms.

Highlighting the significance of major tournaments, Haskel pointed to the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup, set to take place in the UK, which has already achieved record ticket sales. Similarly, the Women’s Euro 2025 is seen as a catalyst for driving revenue growth in women’s sports.

She emphasized the need for intentional follow-up actions following these major events to ensure sustained domestic success for leagues and clubs. “It’s no longer sufficient to merely host an event,” she said. “Organizers must be innovative in finding new ways to engage fans and promote ongoing participation, even after a champion has been crowned.”

According to Haskel, the commercial allure of female athletes and women’s sports remains unparalleled as the sector gains prominence on the world stage. She noted that strategic investment is critical for establishing a professional global landscape and fostering an engaging industry for future generations. “It’s essential for women’s sports organizations to create appropriate structures, outline a definitive investment strategy, and establish a long-term vision to navigate a rapidly evolving global marketplace.”
