DeMarcus Ware Advocates for Broncos’ Strategic Receiver Acquisition
DeMarcus Ware, a prominent figure in NFL history known for his impactful nine-year spell with the Dallas Cowboys, gained his Super Bowl victory with the Denver Broncos, marking a high point in his distinguished career.
After joining the Broncos ahead of the 2014 season, Ware spent his final three years in Denver, culminating in a Super Bowl 50 championship following the 2015 season. In that decisive game, he delivered an impressive performance, contributing significantly with five tackles and two sacks.
Today, the Broncos appear to be on an upward trajectory, having recently returned to the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade, ending one of the most prolonged postseason absences in NFL history.
Under the experienced guidance of head coach Sean Payton and the youthful energy of quarterback Bo Nix, Ware believes the Broncos have the potential to advance from a playoff contender to an elite team. “For sure,” Ware expressed confidently when asked about the team’s prospects. “Based on their performance last year, there are just a few pieces they still need to secure. Their defense is solid, and the offense shows promise, but what they lack is experience. A well-rounded supporting cast is essential.”
Ware points out the need for the Broncos to acquire a possession receiver who can alleviate pressure from Courtland Sutton and serve as another offensive weapon for Nix. Marvin Mims, the team’s next best wideout, posted respectable numbers with 39 catches, 503 yards, and six touchdowns, yet he has largely been utilized in a special teams role rather than as a primary receiving threat.
According to Ware, identifying a receiver akin to “Wes Welker” would be advantageous for the Broncos. Welker, who played alongside Ware during the prestigious 2014 season, was recognized as one of the premier slot receivers during his peak years in the late 2000s and early 2010s.
Finding such a player to complement Sutton—who recently achieved over 1,000 receiving yards—could be pivotal for Denver’s future success. “Courtland excels as the deep threat,” Ware noted about Sutton. “What they need is someone like Welker, capable of making a notable impact on the offense. This would ideally be a versatile player who can operate in various roles, enhancing the environment for Sutton.”
As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, the Broncos hold the 20th overall pick. Ware suggests that while they may not need to use this valuable asset to pursue a slot receiver, there are likely options available in the later rounds. “You can probably find that Wes Welker-type player in the second or third round,” he noted, although he expressed uncertainty about specific prospects.
Ware advocates for bolstering the team’s defensive or offensive line with the No. 20 pick, having noted improvements in leadership on the roster through offseason acquisitions, including veterans like Taloanoa Hufanga and Dre Greenlaw from the San Francisco 49ers.
“They’ve strengthened their leadership during the offseason, which I believe will help propel them deeper into the playoffs,” Ware commented. “They have the potential to be a sleeper team.” He emphasized the importance of protecting Nix, suggesting that strengthening the offensive line should be a priority. “If I needed to draft for immediate impact at pick 20, a defensive playmaker would be my choice.”
What remains to be seen is how the Broncos will strategize with their 20th overall pick during the impending draft.
DeMarcus Ware Teams Up with Crown Royal for Veterans’ Tribute at 2025 NFL Draft
In addition to his football insights, Ware is joining forces with Crown Royal and the Bob Woodruff Foundation to celebrate 32 military veterans at the upcoming NFL draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
A special ceremony, named the “Hall of Heroes,” will honor these veterans before the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft as part of the NFL’s Salute to Service initiative. “This inaugural event at the draft is truly special, allowing military veterans to experience the excitement and honor associated with such a prestigious occasion,” noted Ware. “This marks a historic moment as we recognize those who have made significant contributions to their communities from all 32 teams.”
