Democrats Launch $5 Million Ad Campaign in Texas Senate Race
Democratic supporters of Rep. Colin Allred are making a significant investment of $5 million in advertising aimed at countering Texas Senator Ted Cruz. This late-stage campaign is taking a firm stance on the issue of abortion as they attempt to challenge what has traditionally been a secure Republican stronghold.
The Senate Majority PAC’s announcement comes at a crucial time, as Democrats across the nation grapple with a series of tough races that could affect their ability to retain power in the Senate. Many Democratic candidates are running in states likely to support Republican nominee Donald Trump in the upcoming election.
Texas has a long-standing record of not electing Democrats statewide since 1994. This trend has persisted despite several high-profile races that garnered national attention, such as Cruz’s previous reelection campaign against Rep. Beto O’Rourke, who became a major fundraising figure among progressives. Cruz narrowly defeated O’Rourke by just over 2 percentage points in that contest.
The focus of the Senate Majority PAC’s ads will be on reproductive rights, particularly in light of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling that eliminated the national right to abortion. Since that decision, Texas has implemented a complete ban on abortions.
The campaign’s advertisements are set to debut in major media markets throughout Texas starting Friday. This launch coincides with visits from both major party presidential nominees to the state.
Donald Trump is scheduled to participate in a taping with podcaster Joe Rogan and will host a press conference in Austin, focusing on immigration issues. Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris will be in Houston for a large rally featuring Beyoncé, a prominent musician who has deep roots in the region.
