Dennis Quaid Reflects on Playing Ronald Reagan in New Biopic
Dennis Quaid, known for his versatile acting career, has expressed a deep connection to the character he portrays in the upcoming biopic about Ronald Reagan. Quaid noted that he sees parallels between himself and the former president, particularly in how both faced career challenges later in life. “He was really kind of a fading actor towards the end of his career,” Quaid remarked, highlighting Reagan’s transition from Hollywood to politics.
Quaid shared insights into Reagan’s early career, mentioning that Reagan, who retired from acting in 1964, became president of the Screen Actors Guild in 1947. This was concurrently with major milestones in his personal life, including the Oscar win of his first wife, Jane Wyman, for her performance in “Johnny Belinda.”
Political Views and Casting Choices
Despite navigating a politically charged environment, Quaid expressed confidence in taking on the role of Reagan. He emphasized his nonpartisan approach, revealing that he has voted across the political spectrum and is currently registered as an independent. He noted, “I didn’t have any qualms” about portraying the controversial figure.
Quaid is no stranger to political roles; in 2010, he played Bill Clinton in the TV movie “The Special Arrangement,” which explored the relationship between Clinton and British Prime Minister Tony Blair, portrayed by Michael Sheen. Quaid’s willingness to tackle diverse political perspectives highlights his adaptability as an actor.
Views on Current Politics
In recent discussions, Quaid has not shied away from expressing his opinions on contemporary political figures. He candidly described GOP candidate Donald Trump as “an a–hole, but he’s my a–hole,” showcasing his complex attitude towards current politics. Prior to Biden’s exit from the presidential race, Quaid had indicated a leaning towards voting for Trump, demonstrating his ever-evolving political views.
Upcoming Projects
Aside from his portrayal of Reagan, Quaid has also been active in other projects. He launched the reality series “Top Combat Pilot” on Fox Nation in 2023 and is set to appear in the Paramount+ series “Happy Face,” where he takes on the role of a serial killer, further diversifying his acting repertoire.
The biopic “Reagan,” directed by Sean McNamara, has garnered mixed reviews. Critics have described it as “embarrassing” while also labeling it “fawning and superficial.” The film draws from Paul Kengor’s 2006 biography, “The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism.” Audiences can expect to see “Reagan” in theaters starting Friday.
