Depeche Mode: M, a new documentary film directed by Fernando Frias, is set to hit theaters later this year.
A feature-length concert film showcasing Depeche Mode’s recent performances in Mexico City will be released in the upcoming months, as the band confirmed on Thursday.
Depeche Mode: M provides an intimate look at the band during their Memento Mori Tour, where they captivated an audience of approximately 200,000 fans in September 2023. The film includes not only scenes from the live performances but also interspersed archival footage, directed by Frias, who gained acclaim for his 2019 film, I’m No Longer Here.
The band expressed that the film aims to highlight their enduring global impact and serves as a heartfelt homage to the deep-seated relationship between music, culture, and the human experience. Depeche Mode: M is anticipated to be a meaningful cinematic experience upon its release.

Depeche Mode’s recent tour, which supported their fifteenth studio album, Memento Mori, concluded in April 2024. The album has been noted for its exploration of themes related to sorrow and vulnerability. According to Rolling Stone, “Melancholy has long been an important part of the Depeche Mode experience,” remarking on how the band’s openness has become central to their identity.
Given that two of the band’s members are now in their 60s, it is fitting that they chose the title Memento Mori—a Latin phrase reminding us of our mortality. This title was selected while their late member Andy “Fletch” Fletcher was still alive. The acknowledgment of mortality is a recurring theme in Memento Mori, yet it is presented in a way that is not overly grim, with several tracks maintaining an upbeat tempo and lively spirit.
