Fans of Depeche Mode may find themselves in a period of anticipation, as lead singer Dave Gahan has indicated that the creation of new music is not currently at the forefront of the band’s agenda.
Gahan shared these insights during a recent discussion with NME, where he reflected on the impact of losing colleagues and friends, particularly the late Mark Lanegan, in advance of a celebratory event marking Lanegan’s 60th birthday in London.

Mark Lanegan, who died in February 2022, was well-known for his contributions to the alternative rock scene, first garnering fame with the band Screaming Trees before joining Queens of the Stone Age in the early 2000s. Over the years, he developed a close friendship with Gahan, resulting in several collaborative efforts, notably through their work with Soulsavers and Humanist.
In his interview, Gahan also touched on his personal inspiration for music, highlighting the creative influence of his daughter, Stella Rose, as she navigates her own musical journey. While he has engaged in discussions about new projects with bandmate Martin Gore, Gahan emphasized the need for patience among fans awaiting new material.
“Martin and I have had some conversations. We recently spent time together in Italy during a lovely occasion celebrating Anton Cobijn and his wife renewing their wedding vows,” Gahan recounted.
“It was refreshing to be together without the usual pressures of work or performances. I asked Martin if he had been writing, and he simply said, ‘Nah!’” Gahan admitted. “That’s pretty typical, especially after dedicating so much energy to a project for several years. It takes time to recharge and come back. We’ll see what happens; I’m not dismissing the idea of collaborating again, but it’s not immediate.”
Depeche Mode concluded their Memento Mori World Tour in April, having completed 112 performances worldwide in support of their 2023 album, Memento Mori. This marked their first new album in six years and represented a significant milestone following the death of co-founding member Andy Fletcher in 2022.
