Heavyweight Title Landscape Shifts as Chisora Faces Uncertainty
Derek Chisora’s aspirations for a world title shot have become increasingly complex as two other contenders, Filip Hrgovic and Frank Sanchez, set their sights on the prestigious IBF belt. Chisora was initially recognized as the mandatory challenger for this title, currently held by Daniel Dubois; however, the emergence of Hrgovic and Sanchez complicates his path.
Recently, Hrgovic secured a significant unanimous decision win over UK’s Joe Joyce, solidifying his position as a key player in the heavyweight division. This victorious bout took place in Manchester earlier this month, marking a pivotal moment in Hrgovic’s pursuit of a world championship opportunity.
Meanwhile, Sanchez made a noteworthy return to the ring, achieving a stoppage victory in February after undergoing knee surgery. If the bout against Hrgovic proceeds, Sanchez will enlist the expertise of renowned trainer Eddy Reynoso, known for his work with boxing superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
Chisora believed he was on the brink of a title shot following his points win against Otto Wallin in an IBF eliminator earlier this year, which had set the stage for his anticipated 50th fight to be for a championship.
The IBF has officially stated that Chisora remains the mandatory challenger for Dubois but emphasized that the mandatory bout is slated to be ordered on April 22. The regulatory body has indicated that with Dubois’ mandatory defense due on June 21, there may not be sufficient time for an eliminator.
Complicating matters further, all indications suggest that Dubois is gearing up for a significant clash against Oleksandr Usyk for an undisputed world title at Wembley Stadium this July. Given that unification bouts take precedence over mandatory defenses, Dubois might pursue this championship opportunity before addressing his obligation to defend the IBF title against Chisora.
Chisora expressed his determination to secure this title opportunity, revealing that he intends to retire following his next fight but is eager for it to be against Dubois at Wembley. He articulated his enthusiasm about the potential matchup, citing a personal connection due to Dubois being trained by Chisora’s former trainer.
In his own words, Chisora conveyed, “I want that shot since the IBF made me mandatory for it. I want it, there’s no two ways about it. I want it badly. It’s a good story, because behind the whole thing is he’s trained by my old trainer. It’s a very exciting fight, and I just want that shot now.”
