The NFL has concluded its investigation into the recent sexual assault lawsuit involving Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. The probe arose following allegations by a woman in Texas back in September, who sought over $1 million in damages. This claim ultimately ended in a confidential settlement.
Watson has consistently refuted the claims through his attorney Rusty Hardin. The league undertook a lengthy review to ascertain whether any disciplinary action was warranted against the player.
“The matter is closed,” league spokesperson Brian McCarthy stated in an email to The Associated Press. “There was insufficient evidence to support a finding of a violation of the personal conduct policy.”
Following this announcement, Watson is no longer facing any potential fines or suspensions related to these allegations, as confirmed by Sky Sports News’ inquiries to the NFL.
What lies ahead for Watson?
Watson’s season came to an early end due to an Achilles tendon injury sustained in October, leading him to conclude the campaign on injured reserve for the second consecutive year. However, he is currently in the process of rehabilitation, aiming for a return next season.
The financial implications of Watson’s contract weigh heavily on the Browns, who are obligated to pay him $46 million in each of the next two seasons. This obligation stems from a controversial trade that saw the team surrender three first-round picks to procure him from Houston, coupled with a staggering five-year, fully guaranteed $230 million deal.
Throughout his tenure with the Browns, Watson has only played a total of 19 games over three seasons, largely due to his previous suspension and ongoing injuries. Despite the serious allegations he faced while with the Texans, the Browns felt confident in his character and proceeded with the acquisition.
While Watson has been cleared by the league, his long-term status with the Browns remains uncertain. The substantial constraints of his contract have left the team in a challenging position as they seek to strengthen their roster.
After a disappointing season that followed a playoff appearance, speculation about Watson’s future with the team is mounting. Releasing him could incur significant financial penalties. In the interim, the Browns have signed Jameis Winston to serve as Watson’s backup. Winston has shown promise, going 2-3 as a starter, and has invigorated an offense that struggled to score 20 points or amass 300 yards while Watson was active.
Winston has expressed his desire to remain with the team and could be a strong candidate for the starting role, even if the Browns opt to draft a young quarterback to build for the future.
