Chris Renaud Shares Thoughts on Live-Action Adaptations of Despicable Me
Chris Renaud, the esteemed director of Despicable Me 4, has voiced his disapproval regarding the notion of translating the popular animated series into a live-action format. Renaud’s involvement with the franchise is notable, having directed the first two films and recently returning for the fourth installment. Additionally, he produced the successful Minions films released in 2015 and 2022.
During a recent discussion with Film Hounds magazine, Renaud was directly questioned about the prospect of live-action adaptations related to the Minions. His response was decisive.
“God, I hope not. That’s my answer.”
Renaud went on to elaborate on his perspective, emphasizing that certain narratives are more effectively conveyed through animation. He believes that maintaining the animated medium is essential to preserving the core elements of the story.
“If there were conversations [about live-action remakes], I haven’t been privy to them,” he stated. “But for me, what defines the world is that it is animated, and it allows us to get away with what we get away with. Like locking a minion in the vending machine or blowing up Gru when he attacks Vector [voiced by Jason Segel]. These are really cartoon ideas, like what would have been in a Bugs Bunny cartoon.”
He continued, reflecting on how a transition to live-action could fundamentally alter the narrative experience. “For me personally, not very appealing. But again, who knows what can happen but that’s my personal feeling about it.”

This perspective resonates with other industry leaders, such as Pixar’s chief creative officer, Pete Docter, who has previously remarked on the difficulties of adapting films like Ratatouille and Up into live-action formats, attributing these challenges to their distinctive storytelling approaches and artistic styles.
Disney’s Success with Live-Action Adaptations
The inherent charm of animation lies in its capacity to construct imaginative worlds and characters unrestricted by realism. Despite the challenges that come with translating animated classics into live-action, Disney has successfully ventured into this territory. Films such as The Lion King, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast have all been transformed into live-action adaptations, with new projects like Snow White and Moana on the horizon.
Under the direction of Jon Favreau, the 2019 adaptation of The Lion King amassed over $1.6 billion in ticket sales globally. Meanwhile, Guy Ritchie’s version of Aladdin also exceeded $1 billion in revenue and received accolades for its artistic execution. Additionally, Beauty and the Beast, helmed by Bill Condon, was recognized as a faithful retelling and achieved similar box office success.
These achievements illustrate the potential for live-action adaptations to resonate with audiences, yet it remains evident that not all animated films transition smoothly into this medium. For now, fans of the Minions franchise can eagerly anticipate more animated content, as Illumination and Universal have confirmed the development of Minions 3, scheduled for release on June 30, 2027, under the direction of Pierre Coffin.
