The beloved American sitcom Malcolm in the Middle is making a comeback with a four-episode special set to premiere on Disney+. However, audiences will notice a significant change in the cast.
Erik Per Sullivan, who originally portrayed Dewey, Malcolm’s younger brother, will not be returning for the special, as he has stepped away from acting altogether.
Instead, the character of Dewey will be taken on by Fargo actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, as reported by Variety.
Returning to their iconic roles are Frankie Muniz as Malcolm and his on-screen parents, Lois and Hal, portrayed by Jane Kaczmarek and Bryan Cranston, known for his compelling performance in Breaking Bad.
Last year, Kaczmarek provided an update on Sullivan, noting that he is “very, very well.” She highlighted his journey, sharing, “He did Malcolm for seven years, starting at age seven and finishing at 14.” Kaczmarek pointed out that Sullivan has no interest in pursuing an acting career, which has surprised many fans.
Currently 33, Sullivan is said to be studying Victorian literature at a prestigious American university and has developed a profound appreciation for Charles Dickens, as Kaczmarek expressed admiration for his choices. “I respect it because many believe that being in show business is the pinnacle of success. It’s not for everyone,” she remarked.
Sullivan’s past work includes the children’s television program Come on Over and a voice role in Arthur and the Invisibles, both from 2006. His final acting role occurred in the 2010 film Twelve, and since then, he has largely remained out of the spotlight, missing various reunions of the Malcolm in the Middle cast.
Details about his current endeavors are unknown, including whether he continues his studies or has taken on new pursuits.
Malcolm in the Middle originally aired from 2000 to 2006, spanning seven seasons, and is celebrated for its unique perspective on the challenges faced by a dysfunctional working-class family. The series featured child genius Malcolm, who frequently broke the fourth wall, providing commentary on his family’s comedic chaos.
Dewey, characterized by his musical talent, often became the target of his brothers’ antics while cleverly plotting to outwit them. A significant plot point involved Dewey being mistakenly placed in a class that did not match his intelligence level, leading him to take on an unexpected role as the class’s unofficial teacher. Following the birth of his youngest brother Jamie, he was notably the first to stop the cycle of teasing that often plagued the family’s youngest member.
Regarded as a modern classic in the sitcom genre, the revival is set to begin production soon in Vancouver, Canada.
In the new episodes, Malcolm has a teenage daughter, played by Keeley Karsten, who will find herself entangled in family drama as her grandparents, Hal and Lois, prepare for their 40th wedding anniversary celebration.
Christopher Masterson, returning as Malcolm’s eldest brother Francis, and Justin Berfield, reprising his role as Reese, will join the reboot alongside Kiana Madeira, who will play Malcolm’s girlfriend. Additionally, Riverdale’s Anthony Timpano is expected to portray Jamie, while Vaughan Murrae will feature as the family’s youngest child, Kelly.
