Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, the second-ranking Senate Democrat, announced on Wednesday that he will not run for reelection next year, concluding a notable career spanning over 40 years in Congress. The Democratic Party has yet to make an official decision regarding his replacement as whip.

In a video shared on the social media platform X, Durbin expressed, “The decision of whether to run for re-election has not been easy. I truly love the job of being a United States Senator. But in my heart, I know it’s time to pass the torch.”

Durbin’s Advocacy for Key Legislation

First elected to Congress in 1982, Durbin has been serving in the Senate since January 3, 1997. As Senate Democratic whip, he championed numerous significant reforms, advocating for immigration policy changes and defending the rights of “dreamers.” He played a vital role in the passage of landmark legislation, including the Affordable Care Act, the Inflation Reduction Act, COVID-19 relief measures, and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Another notable achievement in Durbin’s legislative career was his leadership in initiating efforts to ban indoor smoking, a cause deeply personal to him, having lost his father to lung cancer at a young age. “People started asking, ‘If secondhand smoke wasn’t safe on airplanes, why is it safe in public buildings, schools, hospitals, or restaurants?’ The answer is simple: It’s not,” he remarked during the 25th anniversary of the smoking ban.

Durbin’s Role on the Senate Judiciary Committee

As a key member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he is currently the ranking member, Durbin served as chairman during a critical period. He was instrumental in helping President Joe Biden secure the confirmation of 235 federal judicial appointments, including the historic elevation of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court.

Background and Early Career

Born in 1944 in East St. Louis, Illinois, to immigrant parents, Durbin graduated from the University of Illinois in 1966 and earned his law degree from Georgetown University in 1969. He began his political career as an intern for former Senator Paul Douglas and later occupied several roles in Illinois politics, including serving as counsel to former Lieutenant Governor Paul Simon.

Durbin’s Legacy in Politics

Paying tribute to Durbin, former President Barack Obama, who served alongside him in the Senate, stated, “As an Illinois voter, I couldn’t be prouder that our senator for the last 28 years has been one of the finest in the country. Dick Durbin has always fought the good fight on behalf of working families, and his integrity shines through in everything he does. It’s also true that I would not have been a United States Senator – and certainly would not have been President – had it not been for Dick’s support.”

Several potential candidates have emerged to succeed Durbin, including former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, and Representatives Darin LaHood, Lauren Underwood, and Raja Krishnamoorthi. With Durbin stepping down, Senator Tammy Duckworth will assume the role of senior senator from Illinois.
