G-Dragon’s Updated Lyrics in Palette Spark Speculation About BIGBANG Members

K-pop star G-Dragon made headlines with his return to the music scene in February through his new album titled Ubermensch. His much-anticipated performance on IU’s show, Palette, showcased an updated version of his song, which prompted fans to analyze its lyrics for deeper meaning. Notably, the timing of his return coincides with his birth year, 1988, adding another layer to his highly reflective performance.

During the episode’s finale, G-Dragon altered his rap lyrics, igniting speculation that he was referencing his fellow BIGBANG members, T.O.P and Seungri. Originally focused on the challenges of turning 30, the revised lyrics now highlight themes of seasonal change and his experiences during military service, prompting fans to search for coded messages aimed at his bandmates.

In his new rap, G-Dragon raps, “Jieun, let me tell you I enlisted in the army & turned 30. Four seasons split apart, three disasters (calamities) came in on a double lease. Still full of fire, so I comprehend. Born in ’88 younger than ever ‘Swagger’ in my frame. Now you’re ‘Baskin Robbins, 31’ ice cream Kids & grown-ups, all y’all like that? IU got this, that’s when you shine the most. Even when darkness falls around you, don’t get scared. You’re doing great, hold on, there’s light in the end You will always be loved, ‘YOU’.”

The references within G-Dragon’s updated lyrics have caught the attention of fans, particularly his mention of “four seasons,” which some interpret as a metaphor for the remaining members of BIGBANG, often referred to as OT4, especially highlighting the lineup changes following T.O.P’s departure. Additionally, the phrase “three disasters” is seen by many as an allusion to significant controversies faced by the group, such as Seungri’s legal troubles tied to the Burning Sun scandal and T.O.P’s past incidents, as well as G-Dragon’s own experiences with allegations.

During the interview on Palette, IU expressed curiosity about G-Dragon’s lengthy hiatus from the limelight. He shared that his plans to return were interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and his military commitments, which ultimately delayed his comeback.

He reflected, saying, “I missed the timing in the middle. While trying to make a comeback, COVID-19 also happened, and I also served in the military, so I guess it took a little more than 7 years. It’s been 88 months, unintentionally. I was planning to make my comeback on October 31st. I heard it’ll be 89 months on November 1st. Well, I did think of it as 7 years and 4 months or so. I didn’t think of it as 88 months specifically. These days, I keep seeing the number 8 everywhere. It’s almost eerie. I guess it’s my number.”

The release of Ubermensch marks a significant comeback for G-Dragon, who has not released new music in seven years since Kwon Ji Yong in 2017, and it is his first full album in 12 years since Coup d’Etat.
