Diego Andres Rodriguez Joins the Cast of EVITA in the West End
Diego Andres Rodriguez is set to portray Che in the upcoming production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s EVITA. He will be performing alongside Rachel Zegler, who is taking on the role of Eva Perón. The complete cast and creative team will be revealed soon. The production, directed by Jamie Lloyd, is scheduled to debut at The London Palladium on Tuesday, July 1, following preview performances starting June 14, and will run until September 6, 2025.
Director Jamie Lloyd commented on Rodriguez’s casting, stating, “Diego made a remarkable entry into the professional world before he even graduated, playing Artie in our Broadway production of Sunset Blvd., where he also understudied and performed as Joe Gillis. He is an extraordinary talent and impressive vocalist. We are thrilled to witness his West End debut in this celebrated musical.”
Rodriguez expressed his excitement, saying, “I am absolutely overjoyed to be making my West End debut in EVITA this summer at the iconic London Palladium! Reuniting with Jamie Lloyd and collaborating with The Jamie Lloyd Company’s fantastic team, along with playing opposite Rachel, is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This really is a dream come true!”
As part of the production’s commitment to accessibility, EVITA will offer 5,000 tickets priced at £25, aimed at under 30s, key workers, and individuals receiving government benefits. These tickets will be accessible across all seating tiers and will be available for purchase at a later date, with more details forthcoming.
Rice and Lloyd Webber’s acclaimed musical EVITA makes a return to the West End, reinterpreted under the direction of the award-winning Jamie Lloyd.
The musical features a memorable score that includes classics like “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina,” “Oh What A Circus,” “Another Suitcase in Another Hall,” and the Oscar-winning “You Must Love Me.” It tells the story of Eva Perón, who rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most influential women in Latin American history. A figure of immense hope for many in Argentina, her life story intricately weaves themes of ambition and passion, gaining both adoration and controversy throughout society.
This production is produced by Michael Harrison for Lloyd Webber Harrison Musicals and by Jamie Lloyd for The Jamie Lloyd Company, in association with The Really Useful Group Ltd.
Lloyd originally directed EVITA during the 2019 season at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.
Rachel Zegler is also making her West End debut in the role of Eva Perón. Her theatre credits include the Broadway production of “Romeo + Juliet” at Circle in the Square Theatre. She has gained significant recognition for her film roles in projects like Snow White, Spellbound, Y2K, and her performance in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” for which she received the People’s Choice Award for Action Movie Star of the Year. Additionally, she has been praised for her roles in “Shazam! Fury of The Gods” and “West Side Story,” the latter earning her the NBR Award for Best Actress and a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical.
