Brighton Secures Transfer of Diego Gomez from Inter Miami
Brighton & Hove Albion has confirmed the acquisition of Paraguay international Diego Gomez from Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami. The 21-year-old midfielder is set to join the Premier League side when the transfer window reopens on January 1, 2025.
Gomez embarked on his professional journey with Libertad, a Paraguayan club, before making a significant move to Inter Miami in July 2023, a team known for its star player, Lionel Messi.
Brighton’s Confidence in Gomez
Brighton’s head coach, Fabian Hurzeler, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Gomez. “We are eager to start our work with Diego soon,” he stated. “He has already left a strong mark at both the club and international levels.” Hurzeler acknowledged that, like many young players transitioning from abroad, Gomez will require time to adapt to the Premier League’s demands. However, he believes Gomez has the potential to make a substantial impact.
Details of the transfer remain confidential, with Brighton announcing that Gomez has agreed to join on undisclosed terms.
Career Progression and MLS Performance
Gomez made his debut for Libertad in May 2022 during the Copa Libertadores, where he made a name for himself by netting six goals in 52 appearances. His impressive performance facilitated a move to Inter Miami, where he scored on his debut in the MLS.
In his inaugural season, he managed to score once in five matches but became a key player this year, contributing six goals in 28 appearances as Inter Miami reached the MLS playoffs.
International Experience
At a towering 6 feet, Gomez has showcased his abilities internationally, representing Paraguay at the Olympics last summer and earning 12 caps for the senior national team.
Brighton’s technical director, David Weir, highlighted Gomez’s dynamic playing style, noting that he provides both goals and assists. “We believe his physical attributes will be vital as he adapts to the rigorous nature of the Premier League,” said Weir. He also expressed confidence that Gomez would be ready to compete for a spot in the squad upon his arrival next month.
