Diego Luna to Host Academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards

Diego Luna is set to emcee the distinguished Scientific and Technical Awards organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on April 29. This event will take place at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, a venue dedicated to celebrating monumental achievements in filmmaking.

The actor, renowned for his role as Cassian Andor in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” will be highlighting 14 significant advancements in the film industry. In addition to hosting this prestigious event, Luna is also reprising his celebrated character in the forthcoming second season of the hit series “Andor.” His recent work in the limited series “La Máquina” earned him a nomination for a Golden Globe, and he has a rich filmography that includes standout performances in “Y Tu Mamá También,” “Frida,” and “If Beale Street Could Talk,” along with a role in “Kiss of the Spider Man,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

Beyond his acting prowess, Luna has an accomplished career as a director, with notable films such as “Cesar Chavez” and “Mr. Pig” to his credit. Additionally, he co-founded La Corriente del Golfo, a Mexican production company that aims to promote innovative storytelling and filmmaking.

The Scientific and Technical Awards will acknowledge 14 achievements that collectively represent 37 individual contributors, all recognized for their substantial contributions to the motion picture domain. This year, honorees will receive an Academy Award of Merit, underscoring the importance of innovations, including advancements in captioning technology that enhance film accessibility.

Some notable recipients of the Scientific and Engineering Award include Jayson Dumenigo, recognized for his development of Action Factory Hydrogels designed for fire stunt safety, and Thijs Vogels, Fabrice Rousselle, David Adler, Gerhard Röthlin, and Mark Meyer, who contributed to the creation of Disney’s machine learning Denoiser, a tool utilized in animation and CGI. Additionally, Nir Averbuch, Yair Chuchem, and Dan Raviv will be honored for their work on Sound Radix’s Auto Align Post 2, which seamlessly integrates multiple moving microphones in postproduction.

In a joint statement earlier released by Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang, they expressed: “As part of the Academy’s mission to celebrate artistry and innovation in filmmaking, we are honored to recognize the exceptional contributions of this year’s Scientific and Technical Awards recipients.”

The event has seen varied hosts in the past, with figures like Natasha Lyonne, Margot Robbie, Jason Segel, and Nia DaCosta gracing the stage, which speaks to the Academy’s commitment to highlighting diverse talent within the film industry.
