Hope Springs Anew in Swannanoa with Blooming Tulip Garden

In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastation last September, Asheville, North Carolina, has found a symbol of rejuvenation in the form of a vibrant tulip garden. Nearly seven months post-disaster, the colorful display of 10,000 tulips has emerged at Swannanoa’s Grovemont Park, which had served as a critical mutual aid station during recovery efforts.

Despite the flowers’ bright colors, the community of Swannanoa, located about 10 miles from Asheville, continues to grapple with the repercussions of the hurricane—ranging from lingering storm debris to housing insecurity and job loss exacerbated by the storm. In an act of community support, local tulip wholesaler Marco Rozenbroek, a Dutch expatriate who has settled in Swannanoa, reached out to his contacts at DutchGrown, a European flower bulb company. His request for help was met with enthusiasm, as they sent an impressive shipment of nearly 10,000 tulip bulbs directly from the Netherlands, transforming previously flood-affected land into a mesmerizing display of yellow, purple, pink, and white flowers.

“Flowers give hope,” Rozenbroek expressed in a statement shared with Travel + Leisure. “Planting a bulb is believing in tomorrow.”

The project has fostered a sense of community through collaboration, as residents actively participate in designing the flower beds, including a heart-shaped arrangement. This initiative is one of many driven by the Swannanoa Grassroots Alliance, an organization formed in the aftermath of the hurricane to pool resources and support local recovery efforts.

Local resident Clare Duplace poignantly described the duality of life in Swannanoa: “Living in Swannanoa is like living in two worlds. Every day you’re seeing the devastation… but then you come to a space like this and you see all these flowers and the rocks placed so beautifully, and it makes this space feel like coming home. It’s really beautiful,” she told Blue Ridge Public Radio.

Visiting Asheville: Opportunities to Give Back

The Asheville area is open to travelers eager to contribute to recovery through voluntourism initiatives. Notable organizations include PubCorps, which oversees service projects in the Black Mountain region, and All Hands and Hearts, which is actively seeking volunteers this year. Those unable to visit can still support Asheville’s recovery via the Always Asheville Fund.

As spring unfolds, it’s not just Swannanoa that’s witnessing a resurgence; the entire Asheville community is experiencing renewal.

In terms of recovery, over 75 percent of local hospitality businesses have reopened, allowing visitors to return to sites like the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, featuring 300 miles of breathtaking scenery, including 11 miles within Asheville. Visitors can also enjoy over 100 miles of designated trails in Pisgah National Forest and explore the rich biodiversity at WNC Nature Center.
