Disney+ Revives Classic Film ‘Holes’ as a New Series

Holes, the beloved Disney film from 2003, is making a return with an exciting new adaptation for the streaming platform Disney+. Originally based on the acclaimed novel by Louis Sachar, the story follows a young boy wrongly sent to a detention camp in Texas. In the film, Shia LaBeouf starred as Stanley Yelnats, alongside Khleo Thomas, who portrayed Zero. This fresh iteration will introduce a significant twist: a gender-swapped lead character.

As reported by Variety, Disney+ is developing a pilot episode that aims to reimagine the original narrative. The project is being led by writer and executive producer Alina Mankin, known for her work on shows like Katy Keene and Lodge 49. Liz Phang, who has contributed to productions like Yellowjackets and The Strain, will take the reins as the showrunner. In a notable collaboration, Drew Goddard, currently involved with Matrix 5, is on board as an executive producer.

The synopsis for the new series retains the essence of the source material: “In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.” This fresh concept aims to resonate with both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

The original 2003 film not only starred LaBeouf and Thomas but also featured a stellar cast, including Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight, Patricia Arquette, Tim Blake Nelson, Eartha Kitt, and Henry Winkler. For those who might need a refresher on the plot, here is the official synopsis from the film:

“Dogged by bad luck stemming from an ancient family curse, young Stanley Yelnats is sent to Camp Green Lake, a very weird place that’s not green and doesn’t have a lake. Once there, he’s thrown headlong into the adventure of his life when he and his colorful campmates – Squid, Armpit, Zigzag, Magnet, X-Ray, and Zero – must dig a hole a day to keep the warden at bay. But why?”

‘Holes’ is One of Many Reboots by Disney+

Disney’s decision to revisit Holes is part of a larger trend of reboots and adaptations of classic stories for new audiences. As streaming services continue to compete for viewer attention, the reimagining of popular titles reflects a growing desire to blend nostalgia with modern narratives.
