Disney Halts Live-Action “Tangled” Development Amid Box Office Struggles
Disney has decided to suspend the progress on its live-action adaptation of the beloved animated film “Tangled,” as indicated by sources familiar with the situation. This pause follows the underwhelming performance of the studio’s latest live-action venture, “Snow White,” which only managed to earn $70 million domestically in its first two weeks—a stark contrast to the impressive $174 million debut of “Beauty and the Beast” in 2017 and the $92 million opening of “Aladdin” in 2019.
Filmmaker Michael Gracey, known for “The Greatest Showman” and the recent Robbie Williams biopic “Better Man,” was set to direct the film, with a script penned by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (“Thor: Love and Thunder”).
Disney’s strategy of remaking animated classics into live-action films has been a significant aspect of its business model for over a decade, with successes like “Alice in Wonderland,” “Aladdin,” and “The Lion King” consistently grossing over $1 billion. However, recent entries have shown a trend of diminishing returns, raising questions about the viability of this approach moving forward.
Originally released in 2010 and directed by Byron Howard and Nathan Greno, “Tangled” offered a modern take on the Rapunzel story and marked a pivotal moment in the renaissance of Walt Disney Animation Studios, amassing nearly $600 million in global box office receipts.
The Hollywood Reporter was the first to break the news on this development.
