Employees at the General Services Administration (GSA) have gained access to a specialized chatbot, named GSAi, developed by Elon Musk’s DOGE, aimed at enhancing task automation within the agency. A report by Wired reveals that an internal communication to staff highlighted the chatbot’s capabilities, including drafting emails, generating talking points, summarizing documents, and writing code.
GSAi provides three model options for users: Claude Haiku 3.5, which is the default, Claude Sonnet 3.5 v2, and Meta Llama 3.2. The primary function of this tool is to facilitate the analysis of contract and procurement data, signifying a step towards improved efficiency in government operations.
The GSA, which oversees government real estate and selected IT initiatives, has also been significantly impacted by recent federal workforce reductions, reportedly laying off more than 1,000 employees, as indicated by sources to NPR. This reduction includes approximately 90 positions from its technology division.
Employees using GSAi have been advised against entering sensitive information such as federal nonpublic data, personally identifiable information, or controlled unclassified information. Prior to its broader implementation, the chatbot underwent testing with a smaller group of users last month. Currently, about 1,500 GSA employees are equipped to use this tool, with intentions for future expansion within the agency.
