Doge’s Assault on Social Security Sparks ‘Total Chaos,’ Staff Reports | US Social Security

Recent changes at the Social Security Administration (SSA), including office shutdowns, staffing reductions, and policy revisions, have plunged the agency into what employees describe as “complete, utter chaos.” This turmoil raises concerns that the SSA could be heading into a “death spiral.”

The SSA oversees the largest social insurance program in the United States, providing essential benefits such as retirement, disability, and survivor assistance to millions. By 2025, it is estimated that nearly 69 million Americans will rely on social security benefits, with total expenditures reaching approximately $1.6 trillion, constituting 22% of the federal budget. Despite its financial challenges, particularly in light of an aging population, social security continues to enjoy significant public support.

However, high-profile figures like Elon Musk have labeled the program a “Ponzi scheme,” coinciding with aggressive staffing and budget cuts under his informal “department of government efficiency,” known as Doge.

One anonymous SSA employee and military veteran expressed deep frustration with the direction of the agency, stating, “They have these ‘concepts of plans’ that they’re hoping will work, but in reality, they are seriously harming American citizens. No one knows what’s going on, and it feels like decisions are being made without any coherent strategy.”

Reports indicate that the SSA’s website has experienced multiple crashes recently due to high traffic. There are plans by Doge staff to overhaul the agency’s data management and software infrastructure in an accelerated timeline, raising fears of additional system breakdowns.

In a move that could eliminate 7,000 positions, the agency is implementing voluntary buyouts, along with potential firings based on performance evaluations. The SSA union anticipates even deeper cuts that could reduce staff to an alarming level of 50,000 employees.

Acting commissioner Leland Dudek has acknowledged that direction from Doge is influencing key decisions at the SSA. Public statements from Musk and Trump suggest measures are being taken to address alleged widespread fraud within the agency.

Dudek assumed his post under controversial circumstances, following allegations that he privately shared sensitive information with Doge staff. He has threatened to halt SSA operations in response to legal limitations on data access.

The insider expressed further discontent, stating, “It’s a lot of craziness and foolishness. The current environment is chaotic, and until there’s significant change at the top, it will remain this way. The lack of understanding about the complexities of our work has led to misinformed decisions.”

Rich Couture, a spokesperson for the American Federation of Government Employees’ committee on the SSA, criticized the reasoning behind the job cuts, questioning their effectiveness and efficiency. “The reasoning behind cutting 7,000 jobs has never been clearly explained. It’s baffling to think that this will somehow enhance operational efficiency or service quality,” he stated.

Couture fears that the layoffs may exceed even initial estimates, potentially leading to a systemic collapse within the agency’s service delivery framework.

The SSA has also undergone significant closures and departmental reorganizations, with many employees ordered back to the office after long periods of remote work, often without adequate resources.

Couture highlighted concerns that the return-to-office directive violated union agreements and was imposed without adequate preparation for workers, many of whom lacked necessary equipment.

Public phone services have been diminished, with more field and regional offices facing planned closures across the United States. Couture characterized these moves as an attack on the trust in social security, stating, “The assurance of income security promised to the public is being systematically undermined.”

These drastic measures come at a time when SSA staffing is reportedly at a 50-year low, despite the agency experiencing record demand as the population aged 65 and over expands.

In a recent report, the office of the inspector general noted a significant backlog of payment actions attributed to inadequate staffing, exacerbated workloads, and budget constraints—resulting in unintentional improper payments.

Couture defended the SSA’s efficiency, noting that its operational overhead has decreased by 20% over the past decade, now at less than 1% of payout levels. He rejected claims of inefficiency, asserting that the agency functions effectively within its limitations.

He expressed concern about a developing “negative feedback loop” that could spiral into workforce attrition and operational failures, ultimately leading to further closures.

With ongoing service disruptions, the agency is at risk of falling into deeper inefficiencies. Delay in responses and processing times for services are anticipated to worsen because return staffing levels are very low.

Amidst these challenges, Musk’s portrayal of social security as a detrimental scheme has raised eyebrows across the political spectrum, especially given the controversial comments he has made about entitlements.

Musk even disseminated claims implicating undocumented immigrants in fraudulent activities related to social security, a narrative that lacks factual support.

The allegations surrounding fraudulent activities in social security remain statistically minuscule, with reported fraud rates being exceedingly low. Veteran employees of the SSA dispel these claims, noting the complexities of maintaining accurate records in a severely understaffed environment.

Former SSA worker John Oertel, who spent over three decades with the agency, argued that the narrative of rampant fraud is misleading, asserting that insufficient staffing is the root of many inaccuracies. “Fraud is very rare. Most issues arise because there aren’t enough employees to process the information accurately,” he stated.

Despite facing ongoing skepticism, the SSA aims to reassure the public and stakeholders about its commitment to serving its beneficiaries effectively. Acting Commissioner Dudek stated that adjustments are being made to enhance customer service, particularly for vulnerable populations seeking assistance.

Regarding office efficiency and presence, the SSA indicates ongoing efforts to utilize resources more sustainably and ensure staff availability for required identity verification processes.

In light of criticism about operational waste, a spokesperson emphasized the agency’s vigilance in ensuring that recipients receive the correct amounts of benefits on time while safeguarding welfare programs.
