A recent arson incident in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has resulted in federal charges against a local man, Jamison Wagner, aged 40. Authorities have accused Wagner of being involved in fire attacks against both a Tesla showroom and the Republican Party headquarters in Albuquerque.
Wagner faces two federal charges of maliciously damaging or destroying property through fire or explosives, according to a press release issued by the Department of Justice. This cautionary step highlights the serious nature of the allegations amidst a growing concern regarding acts of vandalism targeting businesses associated with high-profile figures.
The specific incident involving the Tesla showroom occurred on February 9. Following the attack, the dealership was found vandalized with hostile graffiti, featuring phrases such as “Die Elon,” along with other derogatory remarks towards the company and its CEO, Elon Musk. The fire caused considerable damage, particularly affecting two Tesla vehicles.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasized the dangers associated with such acts in the official statement. “Hurling firebombs is not political protest,” he addressed, underscoring that such actions are serious felonies that would be prosecuted vigorously.
As Wagner awaits a detention hearing, he stands the possibility of facing up to 20 years in prison for each of the charges leveled against him if he is found guilty.
While Tesla and Musk have yet to provide comments on the situation, these incidents are part of a worrying trend of criminal acts targeting properties affiliated with the electric vehicle manufacturer, as well as political symbols during a politically charged environment.
