Luigi Mangione, who has been charged with the murder of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, appeared in Manhattan Supreme Court for a hearing on February 21, 2025.

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on Tuesday her directive for federal prosecutors to pursue the death penalty against Mangione, linking the crime to a troubling trend of violence in America. This decision comes in light of the December murder of Thompson in New York City.

In a statement released by the Department of Justice, Bondi remarked, “Luigi Mangione’s act against Brian Thompson — an innocent individual and a dedicated father — exemplified a premeditated and brutal assassination that has reverberated throughout the nation.”

She further elaborated that her decision to push for the death penalty is in alignment with President Trump’s initiative to combat violent crime and enhance public safety.

Luigi Mangione, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, faces several serious federal charges, including murder, stalking, and firearms offenses, all linked to the incident that occurred on December 4, when Thompson was fatally attacked outside the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan.

Further Details on the Brian Thompson Incident

At the time of his murder, Thompson was arriving for an investor meeting associated with UnitedHealth Group, the parent organization overseeing UnitedHealthcare, which stands as the leading provider of health insurance benefits in the U.S.

The Department of Justice characterized Thompson’s murder as an act of political aggression. In their statement, they highlighted that Mangione’s actions exhibited significant premeditation and planning. They also noted the public nature of the crime, which put bystanders at considerable risk of harm.

Mangione, age 26, is currently facing additional charges at the state level in Manhattan Supreme Court, which deals with trial cases.
