Herschend Expands Portfolio with Acquisition of Over 20 Regional Attractions

Herschend, the privately owned company renowned for Dollywood, has announced its acquisition of more than 20 attractions across the United States. This significant move reinforces the company’s commitment to family entertainment and was detailed in a recent press release shared with Travel + Leisure.

The newly acquired properties encompass a diverse range of entertainment options, including family entertainment centers, hotels, campgrounds, water parks, and historic amusement parks. Notable additions to Herschend’s portfolio include Dutch Wonderland in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; Kennywood in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania; and Lake Compounce in Bristol and Southington, Connecticut, celebrated as “America’s First Amusement Park.” This strategic expansion spans across ten states, enhancing the company’s geographical reach.

Andrew Wexler, CEO of Herschend, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “This year, we’re celebrating 75 years of bringing families closer together—and looking ahead to the next 75. Today’s announcement marks a natural expansion and continuation of that vision. By growing wisely and staying true to our purpose, we are building a future where we can continue creating memories worth repeating for generations to come.”

This acquisition helps establish Herschend as the preeminent family-run themed attractions company globally. The organization attracts over 20 million visitors annually through its extensive variety of brands, which include theme parks, aquariums, resorts, and immersive entertainment experiences.

While the company has reassured the public that there will be no immediate operational changes impacting guest experiences, it aims to maintain consistency across all locations. Herschend is committed to providing comprehensive resources for its new employees, focusing on training and opportunities that align with the company’s people-first philosophy.

Herschend’s celebrated portfolio is anchored by iconic destinations such as Dollywood and Silver Dollar City Parks & Resorts. Additionally, it manages Kentucky Kingdom, which recently announced a new $11 million family-friendly area expected to open in May, further showcasing the company’s commitment to enhancing family entertainment.
