Nintendo Unveils New Donkey Kong Title for Switch 2
Nintendo recently conducted a livestream where it shared exciting updates about the upcoming Switch 2 console. One of the highlights was the announcement of a brand-new 3D platformer featuring the beloved character Donkey Kong. Titled Donkey Kong Bananza, this game marks the first of its kind since the launch of Donkey Kong 64 on the Nintendo 64 in 1999. Set to release exclusively for the Switch 2 on July 17, it arrives shortly after the new console becomes available to the public.
The gameplay showcases a vibrant environment that allows players to destroy various elements as they navigate through landscapes, a feature that adds a layer of interactivity. Additionally, there are sidescrolling sequences reminiscent of how contemporary Mario titles occasionally incorporate 2D gameplay. My hands-on experience with the Switch 2 revealed that, while the game appears visually appealing, it possesses a similar aesthetic to what could have been achieved on the original Switch. The stylistic graphics employed by Nintendo often dampen the perceived impact of the Switch 2’s upgraded capabilities, which is worth noting for potential players.
The aesthetic of Donkey Kong Bananza exudes a playful, cartoonish charm typical of the franchise. Although the trailer refrained from featuring the nostalgic well-known Donkey Kong rap, it included the equally memorable “ooh banana” sound effect from DK64, a nice nod to long-time fans.
In the trailer, players witness Donkey Kong ascending mountains and joyfully traversing diverse environments, including a lush forest and a frosty region. The footage also introduces a formidable new Kong character that promises to add depth and excitement to the gameplay.
Details about Donkey Kong Bananza remain sparse, but with its release date just around the corner, fans won’t have to wait long to experience the adventure themselves. Mark your calendars for July 17!
