Marvel’s Secretive Approach to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Avengers: Doomsday stars Florence Pugh and David Harbour recently revealed insights into Marvel’s strategies to keep the details surrounding its upcoming mega-sequel tightly guarded. Known for their stringent efforts to block leaks and spoilers, Marvel is adopting their typical methods to ensure that the anticipation surrounding Avengers: Doomsday remains intact. The film, which is set to premiere on May 1, 2026, is already under production, but ahead of this, the Russo Brothers are keen on maintaining a veil of secrecy.

Following their announcement that production for Avengers: Doomsday has commenced, Marvel disclosed the impressive ensemble of 27 confirmed superheroes involved, including characters from the Thunderbolts, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. As the cast grows, so does the risk of accidental leaks, which is why directors Joe and Anthony Russo have opted to keep the cast in the dark about the plot. This strategy not only preserves surprises but also limits the chances of accidental spoilers from cast members.

Cast Members in the Dark

While both Pugh and Harbour return to portray Yelena Belova and Alexei Shostakov, also known as Red Guardian, they admitted to having no knowledge of their characters’ arcs in the sequel, as they have yet to read the script. Pugh humorously noted, “I haven’t read a script, so I can’t leak anything,” to which Harbour jokingly responded with surprise that Pugh hadn’t seen it either. The duo acknowledged the challenges of keeping a large cast from revealing information about the film but recognized that withholding the script is an effective measure to keep the storyline under wraps.

Similar Measures with Other MCU Projects

Anthony Mackie, who reprises his role as Sam Wilson aka Captain America, has faced similar dynamics leading up to his own project, Captain America: Brave New World. He has shared insights about the extensive security protocols surrounding his script reading, which even included needing a password to access a designated website. This increased caution around Captain America: Brave New World was particularly important since it is the first film set to debut in Marvel’s 2025 lineup.

As Mackie gears up for his debut as Captain America, the previous installment has achieved a substantial box office performance, earning $409 million globally. The MCU continues to prepare for a packed release schedule, with Thunderbolts next on the calendar, followed by The Fantastic Four: First Steps on July 25, 2025, amidst other anticipated titles such as the untitled Spider-Man sequel and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.
