Doubleday Books has introduced a new paperback reissue imprint named Outsider Editions, led by Thomas Gebremedhin, who serves as both the imprint’s creator and editorial director. In this enhanced role, he will report directly to Bill Thomas, the publisher and editor-in-chief of Doubleday.
The mission of Outsider Editions is to revive neglected literary works across a variety of genres, including novels, story collections, memoirs, and essays. Gebremedhin aims to broaden and deepen our understanding of contemporary literature, making it “more expansive, more complicated, and more just,” as articulated in his statement regarding the new imprint.
The first wave of publications from Outsider Editions is set for release in Summer 2026 and will feature a diverse lineup of titles such as Squandering the Blue by Kate Braverman, Natives of My Person by George Lamming, Journey to Nowhere: A New World Tragedy by Shiva Naipaul, Fixer Chao by Han Ong, and Beirut Fragments: A War Memoir by Jean Said Makdisi. Each title will be available in a trade paperback format, showcasing cohesive designs curated by Oliver Munday, the executive director of art and design at Doubleday.
Before establishing Outsider Editions, Gebremedhin, a former senior editor with the Atlantic, joined Doubleday in 2020. He has publicly addressed the importance of diversity within the publishing industry. Apart from his leadership of Outsider Editions, Gebremedhin will continue to expand his catalog of nonfiction and fiction hardcover titles at Doubleday, which includes notable works such as Stay True by Hua Hsu and Dream State by Eric Puchner, the latest selection for Oprah’s Book Club.
