Hormona Lisa Calls Out Anti-Trans Agenda
RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Hormona Lisa took a stand alongside her community on Monday, February 10, addressing President Donald Trump’s recent actions that threaten the rights of transgender individuals shortly after his re-election. (This article contains spoilers for the sixth episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race).
In an interview following her elimination with Entertainment Weekly, the drag artist from Chattanooga shared her insights on how the current administration is moving to undermine the protections that the transgender community has fought hard to establish through a series of executive actions.
Reflecting on her emotions, Lisa expressed the frustration of witnessing a regression in societal acceptance. “It’s hard to find the words to describe how I feel, because I didn’t think I’d have to feel like this in my lifetime,” she remarked. “I thought fighting to be valued as a person and seen as a person was over with … now we’re going backwards with how these people don’t see us as human. It’s crazy.”
In the early days of his renewed presidency, Trump signed multiple executive orders that further marginalize the transgender community in America. These include declaring recognition for only two genders, attempting to withdraw federal funding for gender-affirming care for minors, seeking to ban transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports at schools, and moving to limit military service for transgender individuals. Advocacy groups are actively challenging these determinations in courts across the nation.
Identifying as a trans woman, Lisa conveyed the importance of self-acceptance in the face of such adversity. She emphasized, “I’ve learned to validate and love myself [so] I don’t need it externally,” underlining this as a vital practice in light of the current political climate. “It’s not going to be the last thing to happen towards trans and queer people in general,” she continued. “It makes it more important to know what you bring to the table and that it has value.”
While expressing her opinions about the trajectory of the United States, Lisa conveyed uncertainty. “I’m struggling to put the words together because … we’re kind of going in a different direction these last four years, with public perception of trans people, then you have stuff like this come up,” she explained. “It feels surreal.”
Hormona Lisa was among the 14 contestants on season 17 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, becoming notably the only queen chosen directly by RuPaul for the show. However, in the episode aired on February 7, she found herself in a lip-sync battle against Lana Ja’Rae after a lackluster performance in the ball challenge. Unfortunately, she lost and became the third contestant eliminated this season, showcasing the competitive yet challenging nature of the landscape she and her fellow queens face.
