Drew Carey Surprised by Contestant’s Trip Pricing on The Price Is Right
During a recent episode of The Price Is Right, Drew Carey expressed his astonishment at the prices of trips featured on the show, emphasizing that he is unaware of the costs prior to the game and engages with contestants as they play.
On Monday, April 14, contestant Monte triumphed in the bidding for a home security system during the fourth round of the show. He initially placed a bid of $1,500, which included several advanced features, such as six cameras, a floodlight camera, a smart thermostat, and various smart home devices. However, all contestants overshot the actual price in the first round, with the closest bid at $1,250, necessitating a second attempt. For the second round, Monte adjusted his bid to $700 and won when the retail price was revealed to be $778, making him the closest bidder.
Following his win, Monte joined Carey on stage, where he participated in the Bargain Game. This game involves two prizes where the contestant must identify which item is the better bargain to win both. Each prize is listed below its actual retail price, necessitating careful consideration.
Monte faced a choice between a trip to New Zealand, featuring a six-night stay at Tarlton’s Lounge with an ocean view, including round-trip airfare and a rental car, priced at $7,225, and a Montenegro trip that boasted a six-night stay in a premium hotel, round-trip airfare, a rental car, a dinner, and a boat tour for $13,732.
Carey clarified that the price tags on both trips represented bargain prices, and Monte needed to determine which trip offered the bigger discount. Choosing New Zealand, he discovered that the actual price tag for the Montenegro trip was $16,732, creating a $3,000 difference from the bargain price.
Responding to the revelation, Carey exclaimed, “There’s no way! New Zealand can’t be under 10 grand. I don’t know the prices. I’m just playing along.” The actual price for the New Zealand trip turned out to be $11,225, which meant a $4,000 discrepancy from the bargain price. Monte’s selection proved correct, awarding him both trips, prompting Carey to declare, “I knew it! I knew it! I play along every day just like you do.”
In a jubilant moment, Monte bounded over to root for his prizes, enthusiastically celebrating with model Alexis Gaube. He later achieved a score of 95 in the Showcase Showdown, advancing to the final Showcase segment of the episode.
In the Showcase, he placed a bid on a treadmill, a trip to Boston, and a 2025 Snow White Pearl Kia Soul LX, estimating the total at $28,000. When the actual price was revealed at $32,282, this left him with a difference of $4,282. Since his competitor had a significantly higher difference of $8,000, Monte emerged victorious in the Showcase, taking home additional prizes along with his exciting trips.
